Program Overview

The MEng Biomedical Engineering at Aston University is a 4-year full-time program with the option of a 5-year pathway including an integrated placement year. Accredited by both the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the degree fully satisfies the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Located in Birmingham, the program combines mechanical and electrical engineering, biology, and clinical sciences, offering a curriculum designed to solve complex healthcare problems. Students gain significant practical experience through labs, projects, and optional placements, supported by close partnerships with the NHS, biomedical firms, and research organisations.

Course overview:

  • Year 1: Introductory Mathematics for Engineering, Digital, and Physical Sciences, Introductory Programming for Engineering and Physical Sciences, Engineering Science 1

  • Year 2: Advanced Mathematical Modelling, Biomedical Signal Processing, Biomaterials, Medical Biophysics

  • Year 3 - Placement Year (Optional): Paid placement 

  • Year 3/4: Medical Imaging, Biomedical Implants and Prosthetics, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for Biomedical Engineers 

  • Final Year: Clinical Trials and Research Design, Medical Devices Regulations, Medical Robotics

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Integrated Placement Year in NHS or industry (optional but strongly recommended)

  • Hands-on projects in all years, including a Group Design Project and individual research project

  • Access to cutting-edge facilities in biomechanics, biomaterials, and medical imaging

  • Entrepreneurship module in final year fostering real-world innovation in healthcare
