MEng Medical Engineering with Year in Industry

5 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program

Cardiff University

Program Overview

Medical engineers are talented professionals who use engineering principles to create treatments, diagnostic tools, and healthcare technologies that truly make a difference in people's lives. Their expertise covers a wide range of medical applications, from clinical devices to bioengineering, and they also play important roles in traditional engineering fields.

With access to a dedicated makerspace and partnerships with organizations like Cardiff and Vale Orthopaedic Centre, Biomet, and Arthritis Research UK, your practical learning will be top-notch. Plus, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to take a paid placement year, either in the UK or abroad. Previous students have landed placements at well-known companies like Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, and the NHS.

  • The program is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Course structure:

  • Years 1 and 2 focus on core engineering modules
  • Year 3 is all about your paid industry placement
  • Year 4 features a 30-credit individual research project along with core and optional modules, and Year 5 emphasizes multidisciplinary group design projects.

Your learning will be a mix of lectures, tutorials, labs, and project-based work. You'll have access to a wealth of online resources, including videos, study notes, and quizzes.

Assessment methods include tests, reports, exams, portfolios, and presentations.

Support and Guidance From Year 1, you'll have a dedicated personal tutor to help with both academic and personal matters. In Year 4, project supervisors will provide regular guidance. During your placement year, you'll benefit from structured check-ins and support from academic staff. You’ll also have access to Learning Central for course materials and discussion boards.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

In Year 3, you will be gaining valuable paid experience in the industry, whether in the UK or overseas, with top engineering firms or healthcare providers. If you don’t land a placement, no worries—you’ll simply switch to the standard degree pathway.

In Year 4, you’ll spend a quarter of your time working on an individual research project in a field that excites you. Some of the fascinating topics tackled in the past include brain imaging, blood flow modeling, football injury analysis, and shaken baby syndrome.

Year 5 is all about collaboration, featuring two significant group design projects rooted in current research, which will make up half of your final assessment.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Pursue a career in medical device development, clinical engineering, biomechanics, biomaterials, rehabilitation engineering, or pharmaceutical technology.

  • Opportunities in industries such as healthcare, medical imaging, diagnostics, prosthetics, and wearable health technologies.

  • Further academic study through taught master's degrees (e.g., MSc Biomedical Engineering, MSc Medical Physics), research degrees (MPhil/PhD), or medical school entry for qualified candidates.

  • Potential to register as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with an accredited MEng or appropriate combination of BEng and MSc, enhancing professional standing.

  • Entrepreneurial opportunities in health-tech startups or innovation hubs focused on biomedical solutions.
