4 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program
The MEng (Hons) Biomedical Engineering at NTU is a 4-year integrated master’s degree with an optional 5th-year sandwich placement. This professionally accredited program by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) fulfills academic requirements for IEng registration and partially for CEng registration, positioning students on the path toward Chartered Engineer status.
Delivered at the Clifton Campus, students benefit from NTU’s state-of-the-art Engineering Building, including access to 3D bio-printers, VR suites, robotics arenas, and a FabLab. NTU’s project-based approach includes industry-led design challenges every year, from a first-year Grand Challenge to an individual industrial research project in the final year. Students may undertake a year-long UK or international placement, supported by NTU’s employability team and strong industrial links. The program aligns with the CDIO framework, emphasizing the development of real-world solutions across all stages of engineering innovation.
Course overview:
Year 1: Engineering Science Fundamentals, Engineering Mathematics and Technical Computing, Innovation and Engineering Solutions
Year 2: Digital Systems and Computer Engineering, Engineering Modelling and Simulation Techniques, Industrial Design and Product Case Studies
Year 3 (optional placement): Industry placement year or taught year including Performance Engineering, Group Engineering Design and Optimisation Project
Year 4: Individual Industrial / Research Engineering Project, Design to Market, along with optional modules
Year 2: Integrated Group Design Project
This hands-on, project-driven module is all about putting your engineering knowledge to the test in real-world situations. You’ll team up with others to design and create components or products, honing your technical skills and project management know-how through practical experience and product analysis.
After your second year in this course, you’ll also have the chance to take a year-long work placement (often called a sandwich placement).
Year 3: Group Engineering Design and Optimisation Project
In this module, you’ll bring together everything you’ve learned so far to tackle a significant group project. You’ll pinpoint an engineering challenge, come up with solutions, refine your design, and critically assess the results. This project is a great way to boost your teamwork, problem-solving, and project execution skills.
Final Year (Year 4): Individual Industrial / Research Engineering Project
Your final year wraps up with an independent project where you’ll dive into an engineering problem that interests you—whether it’s industrial or research-based. You’ll conduct thorough investigations, apply creative solutions, and demonstrate your ability to plan, execute, and communicate your technical work in a professional manner.
