4 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program
This four‑year Master’s in Chemistry gives you a solid grounding in all areas of chemistry while letting you experience life and study abroad for a full year. It’s perfect for curious, hands‑on learners who want to tackle real chemical challenges, gain international experience, and stand out to future employers.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1: You’ll start by building a strong foundation across all the main chemistry areas — analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, and solid-state. Modules like Foundations of Physical Chemistry (CH5101), Foundations of Organic Chemistry (CH5103), and the Year 1 Chemistry Foundation Practical (CH5110) help you get comfortable in the lab and classroom. You’ll also get to explore your interests through optional modules, such as Green and Sustainable Chemistry.
Year 2: This year takes your skills up a notch. You’ll dive into more advanced topics like Further Physical Chemistry (CH5201) and Applications of Molecular Spectroscopy (CH5208), alongside hands-on lab work. These modules prepare you for independent research and give you the confidence to tackle complex chemical problems.
Year 3 (Placement Year Abroad): Now it’s your turn to take your chemistry skills global. You’ll spend 9–12 months at a partner institution overseas, completing a research project (Placement Experience Abroad, CH9350) while immersing yourself in a new culture. It’s a unique opportunity to see chemistry in a different context and develop your independence, adaptability, and professional network.
Year 4: Back in Cardiff, you’ll complete a major research project (Project CH5401), working alongside experienced researchers, and choose from specialist modules such as Metals in Medicine and Bioimaging (CH5402) or Catalysis and Interfaces for Sustainable Chemistry (CH5405). This final year lets you shape your degree around your own interests and career goals while gaining real research experience.
Focus areas: Research-focused chemistry, international placement experience, advanced lab skills, specialisation in organic, inorganic, or physical chemistry, global employability.
Learning outcomes: Graduates will gain a deep understanding of chemistry, solve complex problems, carry out independent research, communicate results effectively, and collaborate successfully in professional and cross-cultural environments.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). Graduates can apply for full membership (MRSC) and the Chartered Chemist (CChem) title.
Reputation (employability rankings): Cardiff’s School of Chemistry ranks 12th in the UK for research impact (REF 2021), with 99% of research rated world-leading or internationally excellent. 94% of graduates are in employment or further study within 15 months of finishing their degree.
At Cardiff, learning chemistry isn’t just about lectures — it’s about rolling up your sleeves and getting hands-on experience in world-class labs from day one. You’ll carry out experiments, use cutting-edge analytical tools, and explore real chemical problems alongside experienced researchers. The programme also gives you the chance to spend a full year abroad, letting you see chemistry in an international context while building professional skills and global connections.
Here’s how you’ll gain practical experience throughout the course:
Dive into weekly lab practicals in Cardiff’s dedicated chemistry laboratories, progressing from core techniques to independent, research-style experiments.
Use industry-standard chemical drawing and modelling software like ChemDraw to support both your coursework and research projects.
Work closely in small groups with expert staff, developing problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
Undertake a major, supervised research project in your final year, working alongside PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
Spend 9–12 months on an overseas placement during your third year, completing a research project at a partner institution and experiencing a different scientific culture.
Access advanced analytical and spectroscopic equipment for hands-on investigation of molecules, materials, and reactions.
Make use of Cardiff’s digital tools, including the Virtual Learning Environment (“Learning Central”) for lectures, e-resources, and distance-learning modules during your placement.
Graduating from this programme opens doors to a wide range of exciting careers, from working as a Research Scientist or Formulation Scientist, to roles like Quality Control Analyst or Laboratory Technician. With your strong research skills and the experience of studying abroad, you could also move into areas like chemical product development, environmental monitoring, or technical consulting.
Here’s how Cardiff supports you and helps you make the most of your degree:
One-to-one guidance from the School of Chemistry Careers Advisor, plus full access to Cardiff’s Careers Service for help with CVs, applications, and mock interviews.
Excellent employment outcomes: 94% of graduates are in work, further study, or other productive activity within 15 months of finishing their degree.
Valuable industry connections: past students have completed placements with companies such as GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Pfizer, Dow Chemicals, and BAE Systems.
Professional recognition: accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), which allows you to apply for full membership (MRSC) and, eventually, the Chartered Chemist (CChem) title.
Long-term benefits: your research-led training and international experience equip you with skills that employers value, from problem-solving to independent research. Cardiff’s chemistry research is ranked 12th in the UK, with 99% of submissions rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
Further Academic Progression:
If you’re passionate about research, this degree provides a solid foundation for postgraduate study — whether a Master’s or PhD — in areas such as materials chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, or environmental chemistry. Your final-year research project and international placement prepare you to pursue advanced academic pathways, positioning you for roles in academia, research institutes, or R&D in industry.
