4 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program
The MSci Chemistry with Management Studies at UCL is perfect for students who love chemistry but also want to explore the world of business and management. You’ll gain a solid grounding in chemical science while learning how to lead projects, make strategic decisions, and understand how businesses operate — giving you the best of both worlds.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1: You’ll start by building a strong foundation in chemistry with modules like Chemical Foundations, Basic Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry. Alongside this, you’ll get a taste of management with modules such as Understanding Management and Introductory Statistical Methods and Computing. This year is all about getting comfortable with both science and business basics.
Year 2: Things get more exciting as you dive into core chemistry topics like Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. On the management side, you’ll explore modules like Competitive Strategy and Managerial Accounting for Decision Making, giving you practical insights into how organisations work. By now, you’ll start seeing the links between scientific problem-solving and business thinking.
Year 3: You’ll tackle advanced chemistry topics such as Synthesis and Characterisation Techniques and Advanced Topics in Organic/Inorganic/Physical Chemistry. Management options like Entrepreneurial Finance, Digital Strategy and Transformation, and Strategic Project Management let you shape your own learning path. This year is about applying your knowledge to real-world challenges in both science and business.
Year 4: In your final year, you’ll complete an extended research project, working alongside leading UCL scientists on cutting-edge chemical research. You’ll also choose high-level management modules like Big Data Analytics, Global Entrepreneurial Systems, or Topics in Modern Chemistry. This year brings everything together, giving you the confidence and skills to excel in either a scientific or business-focused career.
Focus areas: “Advanced chemistry (organic, inorganic, physical) combined with management skills in strategy, accounting, project management, and entrepreneurship.”
Learning outcomes: “You’ll graduate ready to tackle complex chemical problems, conduct original research, apply management tools, make strategic business decisions, and communicate effectively in both scientific and business contexts.”
Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), meeting the academic requirements for Chartered Chemist (CChem).
Reputation (employability rankings): UCL Chemistry is consistently ranked among the top in the UK, 5th nationally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 for Chemistry.
At UCL, you don’t just learn chemistry and management from textbooks — you get to roll up your sleeves and experience it firsthand. From day one, you’ll work in modern, fully equipped chemistry laboratories, using cutting-edge instruments to carry out real experiments and explore chemical synthesis and characterisation. On the management side, you’ll tackle case studies, group projects, and interactive workshops, giving you a taste of real-world business challenges while developing teamwork and problem-solving skills. You’ll also have the chance to take part in an extended research project in your final year, working alongside leading UCL scientists and applying both your scientific knowledge and management insight.
Some of the hands-on experiences you’ll enjoy include:
Weekly laboratory classes in UCL’s Chemistry department, giving you practical experience with instrumentation, experimental design, and data analysis.
Small-group tutorials and workshops to practise scientific reasoning, presentation skills, and collaborative problem-solving.
An extended research project in your final year, allowing you to carry out original research in a state-of-the-art laboratory under expert supervision.
Group work and applied projects in management modules such as Competitive Strategy, Digital Strategy & Transformation, and Understanding Management, helping you develop real-world business skills.
Access to cross-disciplinary facilities and institutes, like the London Centre for Nanotechnology, where you can explore the intersection of chemistry, technology, and business.
