5 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program
If you’re fascinated by the “why” behind materials — why some conduct electricity, why others are strong yet lightweight — this MChem in Materials Chemistry is perfect for you. Over five years, you’ll learn how to design and understand advanced materials for energy, electronics, biomaterials, catalysts, and more, combining chemistry with cutting-edge research.
Curriculum Structure:
First Year: You’ll start by building a solid foundation in chemistry with modules like Introductory Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry 1, and Organic and Biological Chemistry 1. Alongside these, you can explore other subjects of interest, giving you a well-rounded start.
Second Year: This is where your chemistry knowledge deepens. You’ll take Inorganic Chemistry 2, Organic Chemistry 2, and Physical Chemistry 2, sharpening your lab skills, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities — all crucial for tackling more complex materials topics later.
Third Year: Here, you’ll start specializing in materials chemistry. Modules like Chemistry of Materials, Introduction to Analysis of Materials, and Quantum Theory of Atoms, Molecules and Solids help you understand the structure, properties, and behavior of materials on a micro and nano scale.
Fourth Year: You get the exciting chance to either take a placement in industry or a research lab for up to 12 months, or stay at St Andrews to dive into advanced modules such as Research Skills Lab and Scientific Writing. This is your opportunity to gain real-world experience and develop practical, employable skills.
Fifth Year: The final year is all about high-level research and specialization. You’ll explore areas like Energy Conversion and Storage, Nanostructured Materials, and Surface Science and Heterogeneous Catalysis, while completing an independent research project. By the end, you’ll have hands-on experience and deep expertise that will set you apart.
Focus areas: materials for energy and IT, biomaterials, catalysts, smart coatings, nanotechnology, functional materials.
Learning outcomes: design and develop new materials, relate composition and structure to properties, gain research and analytical skills, work independently, communicate scientific results, solve complex problems in chemistry and materials science.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), ensuring your degree meets professional chemical science standards.
Reputation (employability rankings): St Andrews chemistry graduates enjoy excellent career prospects, with over 95% employed in multinational companies or research sectors soon after graduation.
From the very start, this course is designed to get you working with real materials and real problems. You won’t just sit in lectures — you’ll spend plenty of time in labs, working on group projects, and using the kind of tools and software chemists actually use in research and industry. You’ll also get access to small-group tutorials, the School’s excellent libraries, and online learning resources to support your independent study. By the time you finish, you’ll have hands-on experience that employers and research labs value highly:
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
External placements: In your fourth year, you can take a placement in a leading UK or overseas industrial lab, gaining practical, real-world experience and industry insights.
Independent research project: In your final year, you’ll carry out a substantial research project within one of the School’s research groups, designing experiments, analyzing data, and presenting your findings both in writing and orally.
Laboratory teaching & group work: Throughout the programme, you’ll spend time in small groups in the labs and tutorials, covering modules like Materials Analysis, Quantum Theory, and Materials Processing. These sessions develop your practical, analytical, and teamwork skills.
Teaching formats & digital tools: Lectures are supported by online resources, and you’ll complete assignments, presentations, and lab reports that hone your digital literacy and scientific communication.
Industry links & professional support: The School has strong connections with chemical and materials companies, and you’ll receive guidance on CV preparation, internships, and professional development.
Graduates from this programme leave with the skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience to step straight into exciting careers in the chemical and materials industries. Typical roles include materials development scientist, research chemist, process engineer, or R&D project lead — all positions where you’ll be solving real-world problems and designing innovative materials. The combination of practical labs, research projects, and industry placements gives you a real edge:
Career support: The University’s Careers Centre offers one-to-one advice, CV and interview workshops, networking events, and direct connections to industry partners to help you land your first role.
Employment stats: Over 95% of chemistry graduates from St Andrews secure employment or postgraduate study soon after graduation.
Industry partnerships: Through placements and collaborations, you can gain experience with leading companies such as BASF, Johnson Matthey, AstraZeneca, DSM, and BP.
Accreditation value: Your degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), ensuring professional recognition and credibility with employers worldwide.
Graduation outcomes: You’ll leave with strong research, analytical, and technical skills, alongside transferable skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and scientific communication.
Further Academic Progression:
If you want to continue your studies, you could move on to a PhD in materials science, chemistry, or engineering, or pursue a specialized MSc in areas like nanotechnology, renewable energy materials, or advanced manufacturing. Alternatively, you could enter industry research or professional development programmes, taking advantage of your hands-on experience and expertise to quickly progress in your career.
