4 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program
The MChem Chemistry with Data Science degree at Strathclyde combines the excitement of chemistry with the power of data science, giving you the skills to tackle real scientific problems using both lab experiments and computational methods. It’s perfect for curious, tech-savvy students who love chemistry and want to use tools like Python, AI, and big-data analysis to make discoveries that really matter.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year sets the stage with the essentials of chemistry: analytical, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry through modules like Chemistry: Principles & Practice 1 & 2. You’ll also pick up programming basics with Python 101 for Chemists, helping you start thinking about data alongside molecules. Lab sessions and workshops, such as Practical & Transferable Skills, give you hands-on experience and help you build confidence in applying theory to real experiments.
Years 2 & 3
In the second and third years, you dive deeper into chemistry, exploring topics like Inorganic Chemistry, Fundamental Organic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry 1. At the same time, Chemical Informatics 1 introduces you to computational techniques and data analysis in chemical research. You’ll spend more time in the lab, collaborating on experiments, running simulations, and presenting your findings, which prepares you for independent research later.
Year 4 (MChem)
For MChem students, the fourth year offers a chance to gain real-world experience through an optional 12-month industrial placement in the UK or abroad. You’ll also take advanced modules such as Process Analytical Chemistry and Oxidation & Reduction in Synthesis, and continue developing your computational skills with distance learning projects.
Final Year (BSc Honours or Year 5 MChem)
In your final year, you’ll focus on the cutting edge of chemistry and data science, studying modules like AI & Machine Learning, Time Series Analysis for Chemistry, and Computational Chemistry. The highlight is your major independent research project, where you can explore a topic you’re passionate about, combining lab work and computational methods to produce something truly original.
Focus Areas
Chemistry, chemical informatics, AI & machine learning, Python programming, computational chemistry, high-performance computing.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you’ll be confident in all major branches of chemistry and able to tackle complex problems using computational tools and data analysis. You’ll also graduate with practical lab experience, programming skills, scientific communication abilities, and teamwork and problem-solving confidence.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
This degree is fully accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, meaning it meets the educational requirements for becoming a Chartered Chemist in the UK.
Reputation & Employability
Strathclyde’s Chemistry department is highly regarded — ranked 1st in the UK in the Guardian University Guide (2026). Graduates leave with a unique blend of chemistry and data science skills, making them highly sought after in both scientific research and data-driven industries.
One of the best things about studying Chemistry with Data Science at Strathclyde is how much real, hands-on experience you get. From your very first weeks, you’ll be working in modern labs, using industry-level equipment, and learning digital tools that scientists rely on every day. As you move through the degree, your practical work becomes more advanced — from carrying out your own experiments to taking part in research, group problem-solving, and even year-long industry placements. Strathclyde really focuses on letting you “learn by doing,” so you graduate with confidence in the lab, at the computer, and in professional settings.
And to give you a clearer picture of what this looks like in practice, here’s what you actually get to experience:
Modern, fully equipped teaching labs, where you’ll run experiments across analytical, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry — with practical classes happening up to four afternoons a week.
Access to advanced scientific instruments, including NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, HPLC, GC, IC, ATR-IR, rotary evaporators, and more.
Research-focused project work, especially in your final year, carried out in specialist research laboratories alongside staff and postgraduate researchers.
A paid 12-month industrial placement (optional for MChem students), offered through Strathclyde’s long-established industry partnership network in the UK and internationally.
The Chemistry Clinic, where students work with real companies — especially small and medium enterprises — to solve chemistry and data-based challenges.
High-performance computing and computational tools, supported through the Strathclyde Computational and Theoretical Chemistry Hub (SCoTCH), giving you experience with modeling and data-driven science.
Extra research and knowledge-exchange placements, offering additional ways to collaborate with academics and industry partners on real-world projects.
Graduates from Strathclyde’s Chemistry with Data Science degree step into the job market with a rare blend of scientific expertise and digital skill — something employers value enormously right now. Whether you see yourself solving industry challenges, working in advanced labs, or analysing complex datasets, this degree opens doors. Typical career paths include roles like data scientist, analytical chemist, pharmaceutical researcher, and regulatory affairs specialist, giving you plenty of flexibility depending on where your interests grow.
And Strathclyde gives you strong support on your way into these careers:
