Psychology and Language Sciences MSci

4 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program

University College London

Program Overview

The Psychology and Language Sciences MSci at UCL is an integrated four-year master’s degree that combines psychology, linguistics, and communication science into a single advanced programme. It is designed for students who want a deep scientific understanding of how language, cognition, and behaviour interact, and who are aiming for research-intensive or clinical psychology-related careers.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
In the first year, you build a strong foundation in psychological science and language studies. You study core modules such as Perception, Attention and Learning, Memory, Introduction to Speech Science, Introduction to Statistical Methods, and Evidence and Enquiry in Psychology, along with an introduction to language and communication. This year focuses on developing core scientific thinking and basic research skills.

Year 2
In the second year, you expand into more specialised areas of psychology and language. You study modules including Development of Communication and Cognition, Language and Cognition, Intermediate Statistical Methods, Qualitative and Mixed Research Methods, and Science of Bias. You may also take an observational placement in early years settings to understand real-world communication and development.

Year 3
The third year focuses on independent research and advanced study. You complete a major research project under academic supervision while choosing from specialist modules such as Bilingualism and Second Language Acquisition, Deafness, Cognition and Language, Applied Decision-making, Developmental Disorders of Language Learning and Cognition, and Conversation Analysis. This year strengthens your ability to conduct and evaluate research independently.

Year 4 (Master’s level)
In the final year, you progress to advanced Master’s-level training with a strong focus on research and application. You complete an extended research project, often in a UCL lab or applied setting, and take advanced modules such as Practical Research Skills and Advanced Statistical Research Methods. This year prepares you for professional research or postgraduate training.

Focus areas: cognitive psychology, linguistics, language development, speech science, psycholinguistics, neuroscience of language, communication disorders, behavioural science, research methods, applied psychology

Learning outcomes: advanced understanding of language and cognition, ability to design and conduct independent research, strong analytical and statistical skills, application of psychology and linguistics to real-world problems, critical evaluation of scientific evidence, preparation for clinical and research pathways

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), giving eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is required for further professional psychology training in the UK.

Reputation (employability rankings): UCL is consistently ranked among the top universities worldwide for psychology and related fields in major global rankings such as QS, with strong graduate outcomes in research, healthcare, and applied psychology roles.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At UCL, this MSci is designed to move you from learning theory to doing real psychological and language research step by step. You begin by working with real datasets and experimental designs, then gradually progress into lab-based training and advanced research projects that reflect how psychology and language science are actually practiced in academia and industry. By the final years, you are operating almost like a junior researcher, working on independent projects and applying advanced methods in real settings.

Experiential learning in this programme is closely tied to UCL’s research environment and applied training opportunities:

  • Access to UCL’s Psychology and Language Sciences research laboratories for experiments in cognition, language, speech, and neuroscience

  • Training in statistical and research tools such as R for analysing real psychological and linguistic data

  • Active involvement in research projects, including designing experiments, collecting data, and interpreting results

  • Final-year placement either within a UCL research group or in an applied setting such as clinical, educational, or research organisations

  • Completion of an advanced independent research project under academic supervision

  • Practical Research Skills training in the final year, including short lab-based placements and applied research experience

  • Use of UCL’s online learning platform for datasets, lecture materials, recordings, and research resources

  • Access to specialist language and speech science library resources, including assessment tools and academic research materials

  • Participation in departmental seminars, academic talks, and psychology and linguistics societies for direct exposure to current research

  • Small-group tutorials and lab sessions focused on experimental methods, statistical analysis, and communication research

Overall, the programme ensures you graduate with strong research capability and hands-on experience, preparing you for postgraduate study, clinical training, or research-focused careers in psychology and language sciences.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from this programme leave with advanced skills in psychology, linguistics, and research methods, making them well prepared for both clinical pathways and research-driven careers. Many continue into specialist postgraduate training or enter roles focused on understanding human behaviour, communication, and cognition in applied or academic settings.

Typical career paths include: clinical psychologist (after further training), assistant psychologist, speech and language therapy assistant, research scientist, behavioural data analyst, and cognitive neuroscience researcher.

Career support and outcomes:

  • UCL Careers offers personalised support including one-to-one guidance, CV development, interview preparation, and psychology-focused employer events

  • Strong graduate outcomes, with a high proportion of students moving into employment or further study within 15 months of graduation

  • Access to UCL’s research networks, healthcare links, and interdisciplinary institutes supporting careers in NHS, education, research, and industry

  • British Psychological Society accreditation provides eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is essential for professional psychology training routes

  • Strong progression into healthcare, academic research, education, data science, and behavioural science sectors

Further Academic Progression:
After completing the MSci, students often progress to Doctorate-level training in Clinical Psychology or Master’s programmes in areas such as Cognitive Neuroscience, Mental Health, Speech and Language Therapy, Educational Psychology, or Data Science. Many also pursue PhD research in psychology or linguistics, building on the strong research training and laboratory experience gained during the degree.
