Psychology MSci

4 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program

University College London

Program Overview

The Psychology MSci at UCL is an integrated four-year master’s programme that provides an in-depth scientific study of human behaviour, cognition, and mental processes. It is designed for students who want strong research training and are aiming for advanced careers in clinical psychology, neuroscience, or academic and applied psychological research.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
In the first year, you build a solid foundation in core areas of psychology and research methods. You study modules such as Introduction to Statistical Methods, Memory and Decision, Evidence and Enquiry in Psychology, and Social Psychology and Individual Differences, which help you understand how psychological research is designed and interpreted.

Year 2
The second year develops your understanding of how the brain and behaviour are connected. You explore modules including Brain and Behaviour, Developmental Psychology, Perception, Health and Clinical Psychology, and Intermediate Statistical Methods, while also strengthening your research skills through structured methods training and applied psychological analysis.

Year 3
In the third year, you begin specialising and working more independently. You complete a substantial Research Project and choose from advanced modules such as Topics in Clinical Psychology, Organisational Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, and Applied Decision-making, allowing you to focus on areas that match your career interests.

Year 4 (Master’s level)
The final year is at Master’s level and focuses heavily on advanced research and professional application. You complete an extended Research Project, often in collaboration with UCL research labs or applied settings, and study advanced research methods to prepare for professional or academic careers in psychology.

Focus areas: cognitive psychology, clinical psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, behavioural science, perception, mental health, decision-making, research methods, applied psychology

Learning outcomes: advanced understanding of psychological theory and behaviour, ability to conduct independent and high-level research, strong statistical and analytical competence, application of psychology in real-world contexts, critical evaluation of scientific evidence, preparation for clinical and research pathways

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), providing eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is required for further professional psychology training.

Reputation (employability rankings): UCL is consistently ranked among the world’s leading universities for psychology, with strong graduate outcomes in clinical practice, research, and applied psychology fields.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At UCL, the Psychology MSci is designed to give you hands-on experience in how psychological research is actually carried out, not just how it is studied in theory. From the early stages of the degree, you are trained to work with real data, design experiments, and use professional research methods that are standard in modern psychology. As you move through the course, this becomes more advanced, with lab work, independent research, and applied experience in real research or professional settings.

Experiential learning in this programme is built around research labs, data analysis tools, and applied psychological training environments:

  • Access to UCL psychology research laboratories for studying cognition, behaviour, perception, and neuroscience-based experiments

  • Training in statistical and research methods using tools such as R for analysing real psychological datasets

  • Active participation in research projects, including designing studies, collecting data, and interpreting findings

  • Final-year research placement in a UCL research group or applied professional setting

  • Completion of an advanced independent research project under academic supervision

  • Use of UCL’s online learning system for research materials, datasets, lecture content, and academic resources

  • Small-group lab sessions focused on experimental design, statistical reasoning, and scientific writing

  • Regular engagement with departmental research seminars and psychology-focused academic discussions

  • Access to specialist psychology libraries and academic resources supporting clinical, cognitive, and behavioural research

Overall, the programme ensures that students graduate with strong research experience and practical skills that prepare them for clinical psychology training, postgraduate study, or research-based careers.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from the Psychology MSci develop advanced research skills and a strong understanding of human behaviour across cognitive, clinical, developmental, and neuroscience psychology. This prepares them for highly competitive roles in mental health, research, and data-driven fields, as well as further professional training required for chartered psychology careers.

Typical job roles include: clinical psychologist (after doctoral training), assistant psychologist, research scientist, neuroscience researcher, behavioural data analyst, and roles in mental health services, academia, and cognitive science industries.

Career support and outcomes:

  • UCL Careers offers personalised support such as one-to-one guidance, CV building, interview preparation, and psychology-focused career events

  • Strong graduate outcomes, with most students moving into employment or further study within 15 months of graduation

  • Access to UCL’s strong academic and professional network, including links with research institutes and healthcare environments

  • British Psychological Society accreditation provides eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, essential for clinical psychology training routes

  • High demand for graduates across healthcare, research, education, and behavioural science sectors

Further Academic Progression:
After completing the MSci, students commonly continue into Doctorate training in Clinical Psychology or Master’s programmes in areas such as Cognitive Neuroscience, Mental Health, Neuropsychology, Data Science, or Educational Psychology. Many also pursue PhD research in psychology or neuroscience, building on the strong research training developed throughout the degree.
