4 Years On Campus Accelerated-masters Program
This MChem degree is perfect if you love chemistry and want to take it beyond the classroom — you’ll study advanced chemistry concepts while spending a full year working in a real industry setting, gaining hands-on experience that will set you apart. It’s designed for curious, ambitious students who want to explore areas like materials, medicinal, analytical, sustainable, and digital chemistry while building practical skills and professional confidence.
Curriculum structure
Year 1
In your first year, you’ll get a strong foundation in chemistry. You’ll explore modules like Core Chemistry 1A: Structure, Bonding & Change, Core Chemistry 1B: Reactions, Mechanisms and Sustainability Principles, and Foundations of Chemistry: Mathematics, Physics and Biology, alongside practical lab work that introduces you to analytical and digital chemistry skills. It’s all about giving you the tools to succeed in more advanced studies later.
Year 2
Year two dives deeper. You’ll study Core Chemistry 2A: Thermodynamics, Transition Metals and Synthetic Methods and Core Chemistry 2B: Spectroscopy and Strategies for Sustainable Synthesis, while building your lab and industry awareness through Shaping Future Chemists: Quantitative Skills and Industry Awareness. You’ll get more hands-on experience and start connecting what you learn in lectures with real-world applications.
Year 3
In your third year, you’ll start to link directly with research and industrial themes. Modules like Current Topics in Synthetic Design and Advanced Materials, Advanced Practical Skills, and optional modules in analytical chemistry, catalysis, or sustainable chemistry let you explore your specific interests. Mini research projects or literature reviews will give you a taste of what working as a professional chemist is really like.
Year 4
The final year is your big opportunity: you’ll spend a full year on a real industrial research placement through Chemical Research Project (External). Alongside this, optional advanced modules let you tailor your learning in areas like Advanced Synthesis, Electrochemistry for Energy Applications, and Commercial Considerations for Year in Industry. By the end, you’ll have real-world experience and a portfolio of advanced chemistry skills that employers love.
Focus areas
Materials chemistry, medicinal chemistry, analytical and digital chemistry, sustainable catalysis, chemical modelling/AI and automation.
Learning outcomes
You’ll finish the degree with advanced practical and research skills, digital and mathematical fluency, problem-solving ability, professional awareness, strong communication skills, and readiness for a career in chemistry or further study.
Professional alignment (accreditation)
This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), putting you on the path to becoming a Chartered Chemist and giving your degree strong professional credibility.
