Bachelor of Design in Architecture (Honours) and Master of Architecture

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Sydney

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Design in Architecture (Honours) and Master of Architecture at the University of Sydney is a five-year, immersive journey for people who see architecture as more than buildings — it’s about shaping experiences, communities, and everyday life. From your first studio to your final thesis, you’ll grow as a designer, thinker, and future professional, graduating with both the confidence and creativity needed to step into architectural practice.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Finding Your Design Voice
Your first year is about curiosity, experimentation, and learning how architects think. In Architecture Studio 1A and 1B, you’ll explore space, form, and ideas through hands-on design work, while Architectural History and Theory helps you understand where architecture comes from and why it matters. Electives add room to explore interests early, letting your creative identity begin to take shape.

Year 2: Building Confidence and Craft
By second year, your ideas start to feel more resolved and intentional. Architecture Studio 2A and 2B push you to respond to context and concept at the same time, while Architectural Technologies introduces how buildings actually work — structurally and materially. Art Processes encourages experimentation, helping you think differently about materials, making, and expression.

Year 3: Thinking Like a Professional
Third year is where architecture starts to feel real. In Architecture Studio 3A and 3B, you’ll tackle more complex design challenges and begin engaging with professional perspectives. Units in Professional Practice introduce you to the realities of architectural work, while Critical Thinking in Architecture sharpens your ability to position your designs within cultural, social, and environmental conversations.

Year 4: Transitioning Into the Master’s
As you move into the Master of Architecture, the focus shifts toward depth, direction, and independence. Studios such as Induction Studio help strengthen your personal design approach, while Professional Practice deepens your understanding of architectural life beyond university. Research Methods in Architecture supports the early development of your Honours dissertation — a project shaped by your own questions, interests, and ambitions.

Year 5: Mastery and Meaningful Impact
Your final year brings everything together. Advanced design studios and Architectural Technologies challenge you with layered, real-world design problems that reflect professional practice. The Thesis Studio or Architecture Dissertation becomes the centrepiece of your studies — a deeply personal body of work that represents your voice as an emerging architect. Electives allow you to fine-tune your interests before stepping into the profession.

Graduates are known for their creative depth, intellectual rigour, and professional readiness — supported by the university’s strong global rankings and long-standing reputation in architecture and design.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The combined Bachelor of Design in Architecture (Honours) and Master of Architecture at the University of Sydney is built around learning by doing. Instead of only studying architecture through lectures and theory, you spend much of your time designing, making, testing ideas and presenting your work in studio environments that closely reflect real architectural practice. From your first year through to Honours, you develop a solid grounding in design thinking, building technologies and communication, before moving into advanced studios and an in-depth dissertation that allows you to explore your own interests with confidence and independence.

As you progress into the Master of Architecture, the focus shifts to integration and complexity. You’re challenged to bring together design, technical knowledge and professional standards while working on projects that respond to real-world constraints. By this stage, you’re not just learning how to design — you’re learning how to think and work like an architect.

Experiential learning in this program comes to life through:

Architecture studio units every year, where you work on hands-on design projects that grow in scale and complexity as your skills develop. These studios form the core of your learning and help you build a strong, evolving portfolio.

An Honours dissertation, giving you the freedom to pursue a research and design question you’re genuinely interested in, and to develop a substantial, independent piece of architectural work.

A dedicated Architectural Professional Practice unit, which introduces you to how the profession actually operates — from project delivery to ethics — and helps prepare you for the path to registration.

Access to modelling and fabrication labs, where you can explore both physical and digital making using a mix of analogue techniques, advanced software and fabrication tools, supported by dedicated studio and computer spaces.

Structured studio briefs, reviews and critiques, designed to mirror professional design processes and feedback, helping you refine your ideas, communicate confidently and graduate with a polished, competitive portfolio.
