University of Sydney History

University of Sydney is a public research university based in Sydney, Australia. The University was founded in the year 1850 as a public institution of higher education under the University of Sydney Act 1850. University of Sydney initially started as Sydney College with very limited departments but now it is known to be one of Australia's six sandstone Universities. In the year 1858, the University received a royal charter from Queen Victoria giving degrees that are equivalent to Universities in the United Kingdom. In 1881, it became the first university in Australia to admit female students. University of Sydney over a period of time, grew to be one of the leading institutions of the world.
