Bachelor of Design in Architecture(Interior Architecture stream)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Technology Sydney

Program Overview

This degree at UTS gives you the best of both worlds — a solid foundation in architecture, with the chance to specialise in interior architecture and focus on the spaces people actually use every day. It’s ideal if you’re creative, enjoy visual thinking, and want to design interiors and environments that are not just functional, but meaningful and engaging.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
You’ll start by learning the basics of architecture and spatial design. Subjects like Architectural Design and Construction, Spatial Communications 1, and Architectural History and Theory: Orientations introduce you to how spaces are created, how ideas are communicated, and how design has evolved over time. It’s all about building your confidence in thinking and designing spatially.

Year 2:
In your second year, things become more hands-on and focused. You’ll explore how materials, technology, and environmental factors shape spaces through subjects like Thermal Design and Environmental Control and Architectural History and Theory: Modernity and Modernism. At the same time, you’ll begin working more closely with interior-focused subjects like Design Studio: Inhabitations and Communication and Construction: Generative Methods, helping you connect architecture with interior experiences.

Year 3:
By your final year, you’ll be bringing everything together into more advanced and independent work. You’ll take on subjects like Communication and Construction: Technologies, Material Futures, and a Design Studio: Interior Architecture Major Project, where you respond to a detailed design brief and develop a complete, professional-level project that showcases your skills.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At UTS, you won’t just learn about architecture and interiors — you’ll actually experience what it’s like to design them. A big part of your learning happens in studio spaces where you’re constantly working on ideas, building models, and presenting your concepts, just like in a real design environment. The university supports this with dedicated architecture and design facilities, including fabrication workshops, photomedia studios, and flexible studio spaces where you can experiment, create, and refine your work. You’ll also build a strong mix of hands-on and digital skills, while learning how to collaborate, communicate your ideas, and respond to real design challenges:

  • Studio-based learning environment: Most of your subjects are taught through design studios, where you explore ideas, get feedback, and develop projects in a collaborative, practice-like setting.
  • Hands-on model making: You’ll spend time in workshops and model-making spaces, building physical models and understanding materials in a very practical way.
  • Access to design and architecture studios: Open studio spaces give you the freedom to work on projects, present your ideas, and learn from others outside of class hours as well.
  • Photomedia and presentation facilities: You’ll use professional studios to photograph and present your work, helping you create a strong, industry-ready portfolio.
  • Digital design tools and technologies: Alongside physical work, you’ll gain experience with digital tools and emerging technologies used in architectural and interior design practice.
  • Collaborative group projects: Many studio projects involve working with others, helping you build teamwork and communication skills that are essential in the industry.
  • Industry and real-world exposure: Some projects connect with external organisations, giving you insight into how design works beyond the classroom.
  • Global learning opportunities: There may be chances to take part in international study experiences, exposing you to different architectural styles and cultural contexts.
  • Library and research support: You’ll have access to UTS library resources and study spaces to support your design research and project development.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from this UTS program puts you in a strong position to move into creative, design-led careers. Many students go on to work as interior architects, commercial interior designers, exhibition designers, or spatial designers, shaping everything from retail and workplaces to cultural and public spaces. What really sets you apart is that you’re not just designing — you’re learning how to think, adapt, and respond to real-world design challenges with confidence:

  • Career support that actually makes a difference: UTS Careers and Employability helps you build a professional portfolio, refine your CV, prepare for interviews, and connect with employers — which is especially important in design where your work speaks for you
  • Real industry connections: Through studio projects and collaborations with organisations like the City of Sydney, Art Gallery of NSW, and Zumtobel Lighting, you get a genuine feel for how the industry works and start building your network early
  • Job-ready skills: Because the course is so hands-on and studio-based, you graduate with practical experience, not just theory — which makes it much easier to transition into the workplace
  • Flexible career options: You’re not limited to one path — you can work across commercial, residential, exhibition, or even branding and spatial design, depending on your interests
  • A strong long-term pathway: This degree is also the first step toward becoming a registered architect if you choose to continue with a Master of Architecture and gain professional experience

Further Academic Progression:

If you decide to keep studying, you’ll have some great options. Many graduates continue with a Master of Architecture, which is essential if you want to become a registered architect. You could also explore postgraduate design programs or research pathways if you want to specialise further or move into areas like sustainable design, interior environments, or even teaching and research.
