Bachelor of Design in Architecture(Interior Architecture stream) Master of Architecture

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Technology Sydney

Program Overview

At University of Technology Sydney, this combined Bachelor of Design in Architecture (Interior Architecture stream) and Master of Architecture is designed for students who want to turn creative ideas into real, impactful spaces—and eventually become a qualified architect. It’s a great fit if you’re someone who enjoys design, thinking about how people experience spaces, and wants a clear, structured pathway into the architecture profession.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll begin by building your creative foundation through studio-based learning, where you explore how spaces are designed and experienced. Subjects introduce you to architectural history, design thinking, and visual communication, helping you develop confidence in expressing your ideas through drawings, models, and digital tools.

Year 2
This is where things start to feel more real-world. You’ll dive into how buildings actually come together, studying construction materials and technologies while continuing studio work. Units like scenographic spaces let you experiment with how interiors shape human experience, while also learning to balance creativity with practical constraints.

Year 3
By now, you’ll have your own design voice starting to take shape. You’ll work on more advanced studio projects and electives, leading up to a major design project where you respond to a real-world brief. It’s your chance to bring everything together—concept, technical thinking, and creativity—into a fully developed interior architecture solution.

Years 4–5 (Master of Architecture)
In the final stage, your focus shifts to bigger, more complex architectural challenges. Through advanced design studios like Architectural Design Studio 3 and 4, you’ll work on large-scale, socially and environmentally responsive projects. You’ll also develop professional skills—like collaboration, ethics, and sustainable design—so you’re fully prepared to step into the industry.

Focus areas: Interior architecture, spatial design, construction and materials, sustainability, urban environments, digital design and fabrication

Learning outcomes: You’ll graduate with strong design thinking skills, the ability to turn ideas into buildable solutions, and the confidence to approach complex spatial challenges creatively and professionally

Professional alignment (accreditation): Fully accredited by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, working alongside the NSW Architects Registration Board and the Australian Institute of Architects

Reputation (employability rankings): UTS is well known for its strong industry links and hands-on learning approach, which means graduates are highly employable and ready to step straight into professional practice

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At University of Technology Sydney, you won’t just be learning about architecture—you’ll actually be doing it every day. Most of your time is spent in studio spaces where you design, experiment, and bring your ideas to life using both physical materials and digital tools. The Design, Architecture and Building (DAB) faculty feels more like a creative workspace than a traditional campus, with access to high-end labs, workshops, and collaborative studios that let you fully dive into your projects.

What makes this experience stand out is how closely it reflects real architectural practice—you’ll constantly move between sketching ideas, building models, and using advanced technology to test your designs:

  • Studio-first learning: Your main learning happens in dedicated design studios (open long hours), where you work on projects, present ideas, and get feedback—just like in a professional design studio
  • Hands-on fabrication workshops: You’ll build physical models using real tools like saws, milling machines, and spray equipment, with expert staff there to guide you
  • Digital MakerSpace: Bring your concepts to life using 3D printers, laser cutters, and other digital fabrication tools—perfect for creating detailed prototypes
  • Advanced fabrication labs: In later years, you can explore cutting-edge tech like robotic arms and CNC machines, giving you exposure to the future of construction and design
  • Industry-relevant software: You’ll work in fully equipped computer labs using the same digital tools architects and interior designers rely on in practice
  • Collaborative projects: Many of your assignments are group-based, helping you build teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills that employers really value
  • Model-making spaces: Dedicated areas for quick prototyping let you test ideas using materials like foam, cardboard, and timber before refining your final designs
  • Presentation and exhibition spaces: You’ll regularly present your work in a professional setting, building confidence and preparing you for real client interactions
  • Research-driven environment: You’ll be surrounded by innovative labs and research spaces, encouraging you to experiment and push creative boundaries
