Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Technology Sydney

Program Overview

Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours) – University of Technology Sydney

The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours) at UTS is a deeply creative, hands-on degree for people who want to shape places that genuinely improve how we live. It’s about bringing together design, ecology and cultural understanding to create landscapes that respond thoughtfully to climate, community and urban change — whether that’s a neighbourhood park or a city-scale green corridor.

Curriculum Structure

First year is where you learn how to see landscapes differently. You’ll start reading sites through their geology, water systems and living ecologies while developing your design skills through studio-based work. As you sketch, model and experiment, subjects like Landscape Architecture Studio 1, Communications 1, and Landscape History and Theory 1 help you turn early ideas into meaningful design responses and begin finding your own design voice.

Second year builds depth and confidence. You’ll explore how ecological processes shape cities and landscapes, and how thoughtful design can reconnect people with nature. In Landscape Architecture Studio 3, you’ll work on public spaces with real social and environmental purpose, while learning to use more advanced tools to communicate and resolve your design ideas with clarity.

By third year, your focus expands to cities, infrastructure and communities. Studio projects challenge you to think critically about health, equity and resilience in urban environments, while Landscape History and Theory 3 helps you situate your work within broader cultural and historical narratives. This is where your thinking becomes more strategic, layered and future-focused.

Fourth year is about bringing everything together. You’ll take on a major design research project aligned with your own interests, working across disciplines and engaging with real-world practice. Alongside Landscape Architecture Studio 8, you’ll develop practical knowledge in finance and project management — preparing you to step confidently into professional practice or further study with a strong, polished portfolio.

Focus Areas

Throughout the degree, you’ll work across landscape design, ecological systems, urban nature, public space creation and resilient environments — always grounded in real environmental and social contexts.

Learning Outcomes

By the time you graduate, you’ll be ready to design, communicate and advocate for landscapes that are environmentally responsible, culturally informed and socially meaningful. You’ll understand not just how landscapes look, but how they function, evolve and support life.

Professional Alignment

This honours degree is designed with professional practice in mind. You’ll gain experience collaborating, managing projects and thinking ethically about environmental impact, while building a clear pathway toward future registration with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.

Reputation and Employability

Studying at UTS means graduating from a faculty that’s highly regarded across Australia. With Design, Architecture and Building ranked among the nation’s best, your degree carries real weight — and signals to employers that you’re industry-ready, thoughtful and skilled in contemporary landscape and urban design.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From the very first semester you’re thrown into studio-based learning where you think, experiment and design — not just read about it. You’ll build practical skills in analysing real sites, testing design ideas in two and three dimensions, and learning how landscapes work ecologically, socially and culturally. As you go through the years you’ll engage in larger systemic thinking, collaborate with different disciplines, and have opportunities to apply what you learn in field visits, travelling studios, and real design projects that respond to current challenges like climate change and urban nature. By your final year, you’ll be leading your own design research project — synthesising everything you’ve learned into creative, resilient landscape solutions.

Here’s what that hands-on, experiential learning really looks like in this program:

  • Studio-based design courses throughout the degree where you develop, test and present real landscape design solutions (e.g., Landscape Architecture Studio subjects)

  • Site visits and field experiences that take you out of the classroom and into actual landscapes to analyse topography, ecology and human use

  • Travelling studios or semester-long exchanges with global partner institutions to experience design in different contexts

  • Collaborative design work with allied disciplines, preparing you for interdisciplinary real-world practice

  • A fourth-year design research project that lets you lead a substantial, independent piece of work on a topic of contemporary significance

  • Learning to use practical tools and technologies for ecological analysis, digital imaging and modelling as part of your coursework

  • Opportunities to broaden your skills through streams in Architecture or Interior Architecture within your degree

  • Integration of transdisciplinary electives where you’ll work on real challenges presented by industry partners

This program is genuinely geared toward making you career-ready through doing — from studio work and field experiences to collaborative projects and independent research, all grounded in real landscape challenges.
