3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Flinders University

Program Overview

If you’re dreaming of launching, leading or growing a small enterprise—or simply want to sharpen your entrepreneurial edge—this program at Flinders University is made for you. You’ll learn how to turn ideas into action, manage teams and resources with confidence, and steer a small business in today’s fast-moving world.

Curriculum Structure
Year 1: In your first year, you’ll build a broad foundation in business essentials such as marketing, accounting, management and business law. You’ll tackle units like Marketing Principles in the Digital Era, Finance and Accounting for Leaders and Applying Business Law, exploring how organisations operate and what it takes to work in a dynamic business environment. This year is about discovering what excites you and setting up solid ground for your small-business leadership journey.
Year 2: Now you begin to specialise and really hone your entrepreneurial mindset. You’ll dive into units like Sustainable Resource Management, Developing Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses and Consumer Behaviour, where you’ll study real-world businesses, consider sustainability and ethics, and learn how to read your customer and market. It’s active: you’ll work on projects that ask you to plan, pitch or problem-solve.
Year 3: In your final year you’ll deepen your leadership capabilities and apply strategic thinking through units such as Using Strategy for Business Transformation, Marketing Planning & Strategy: Contemporary and Future Focused and an option like Industry Placement or Building Leaders of the Future. Here you bring together everything you’ve learned: you’ll manage change, innovate, lead teams and get your business ready to go from concept to reality.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

If you're looking for a program that doesn’t just teach business theory but gives you real-world experience to build a genuinely career-ready profile, the Bachelor of Business majoring in Small Business Leadership at Flinders University is exactly that. Right from the start, you’ll learn how to apply what you’re studying — turning ideas into action, working with industry professionals, and developing your leadership and entrepreneurial mindset in real business contexts. It’s about building the confidence and skillset to launch or grow a small business, or take on leadership roles in a dynamic organisation.

Here’s a closer look at the hands-on learning opportunities in this major:

  • Working on industry placements or engaging directly with businesses through “Industry Placement / Engaging with Industry” topics in your second or third year — giving you exposure to actual business environments rather than just classroom case studies.

  • Participating in real-world projects where you will research, develop strategic insights and make recommendations to clients — enabling you to apply marketing, HR, operations and leadership skills in practical settings.

  • Learning foundational business skills in year one (economics, marketing, management, problem-solving, communication, data analysis) and then moving into specialised topics such as “Developing Entrepreneurs and Small Business”, “Marketing Planning & Strategy: Contemporary and Future Focused”, and “Governing Sustainably and Ethically” — allowing you to build progressively from theory to practice.

  • Customising your degree by choosing a minor that aligns with your interest (for example marketing, management or international business) which helps you tailor your practical experience in a direction you care about.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The Bachelor of Business majoring in Small Business Leadership at Flinders University is designed to set you up for a flexible & dynamic career path. By the time you graduate you’ll be equipped to launch your own enterprise, or step confidently into leadership roles in established organisations. Some typical roles you might move into include Owner-Manager (entrepreneur), General Manager or Managing Director, Business Analyst, or Project Manager — with further experience, those pathways could even lead toward CEO or CFO roles.

Here’s what this means for you:

  • Flinders’ CareerHub service offers free support to help you search for jobs, build your network, prepare your applications and transition into employment (or establish your own business).

  • The Business program places strong emphasis on real-world experience: you’ll engage in industry placements or “Industry Projects” where you’ll work on practical business problems and collaborate directly with companies.

  • Your time in the program focuses on building entrepreneurial skills — leadership, sustainable business operations, digital technology, marketing strategy — giving you a toolkit with which you can launch a business yourself or bring innovation into existing businesses.

  • Salary and job-growth outlooks for the kinds of leadership roles you’re being prepared for are very healthy — for example, a general manager role can attract typical salaries around AU$160 k (in Australia) and job growth projected at nearly 10 % over five years.

  • The degree is from a well-regarded university: you’ll benefit from strong learning resources, student support and industry connections, especially within South Australia’s business ecosystem — including opportunities to connect with SMEs, large brands, and government sectors.

  • Graduating with this major gives you options — you could head straight into your career, launch your own business, or use it as a springboard into broader leadership or strategic roles.

Further Academic Progression:
Once you complete this Bachelor degree, you’re not limited to just the job-market. You could choose to extend your studies by doing an Honours year in Business at Flinders, which develops strong research and project-management skills and positions you well for higher degrees (such as a Master or even eventual PhD). Alternatively, you could progress into a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or other specialised postgraduate business qualification there, allowing you to deepen your strategic, leadership and management capabilities.
