Swinburne University of Technology

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Business (Professional) at Swinburne is a four-year degree designed for students who want not just academic knowledge but real-world experience. You’ll build strong business fundamentals, choose a major that aligns with your passion, and gain practical skills through a paid 12-month work placement.

Curriculum Structure

  • Year 1: In your first year, you’ll establish a solid foundation in business through core units like Financial Information for Decision Making, Economics for Business Decision Making, and Business Digitalisation. You’ll also explore sustainability and entrepreneurship with Business for Sustainability, Social Change and Impact and Creative Mindset and Entrepreneurship. This year is about discovering how business works – and how you might want to shape it.

  • Year 2: As you move into your second year, you’ll dive deeper into management in Contemporary Management Principles and marketing in Marketing and the Consumer Experience. Alongside this, Financial Statistics will sharpen your analytical skills. You’ll continue to develop your digital literacy and business thinking, preparing for more complex topics ahead.

  • Year 3: This is when things get hands-on: you take up the professional placement, completing Work Experience in Industry A and Integrated Professional Placement A. These units connect what you’ve studied with real business challenges, helping you apply your knowledge, build your network, and affirm what career path excites you most.

  • Year 4: In your final year, you’ll complete Work Experience in Industry B and Integrated Professional Placement B, rounding off your full-year immersion in the workplace. At the same time, you’ll choose from electives, minors, or advanced minors to tailor your degree based on your chosen major – whether that’s accounting, finance, marketing, or something else.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Bachelor of Business (Professional) at Swinburne is really designed around giving you real-world, hands-on experience, so you don’t just graduate with theory, but with work-ready skills and a credible professional network.

From day one, you’ll build a strong foundation in management, operations, and innovation — and then you’ll put that learning to the test through a mandatory 12-month paid work placement, where you apply what you know in a real business environment, get paid, and earn credit toward your degree. On top of that, there are units where you regularly reflect on your work experience, link it back to your studies, and grow professionally under the guidance of both academic and industry supervisors.

Here are the key experiential learning opportunities you will actually get in this program:

  • 12-month paid professional placement: As part of the professional degree structure, you’ll spend a full year working full-time in industry, gaining real responsibility and relevant work experience.

  • Work Experience units (WEI20001 & WEI20002): These practical units place you directly into industry settings where you can contribute meaningfully and build your professional habits.

  • Integrated Professional Placement A (BUS20010): Once you begin your placement, you’ll take a dedicated academic unit that helps you reflect on your time in the workplace, drawing clear connections between what you learn in class and what you do on the job.

  • Integrated Professional Placement B (BUS20011): In the second half of your placement year, you’ll further deepen those workplace insights. You’ll continue to solve complex challenges, reflect on progression, and enhance skills like teamwork, communication, and ethical decision-making in a real business environment.

  • International Internship Option (BUS20013): If you're interested in expanding your global perspective, there’s a unit that lets you do 30–60 days in an internship abroad, helping you develop cultural competencies, professional maturity, and critical reflection on international business practice.

  • Career Support through the Centre for Career Development: While studying, you’ll have access to dedicated career counsellors, help with your résumé, interview preparation, and even job fairs — all aimed at helping you convert your work-integrated learning into meaningful career outcomes.
