Swinburne University of Technology traces its roots to George Swinburne's Eastern Suburbs Technical College, which opened in Hawthorn, Melbourne, in 1908. The name of the college was changed from Hawthorn College to Swinburne Technical College in 1913. Swinburne Institute of Technology was later named afterwards.
