Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Great choice! The Bachelor of Business at the University of Wollongong (UOW) is built around hands-on, experiential learning — meaning you won’t be spending your whole degree just listening to lectures. From day one, you’ll be out in real business environments, working on collaborative projects, and using industry-relevant tools that prepare you for the workplace from your very first semester.

In your first year, you’ll explore all the core areas of business so you can understand how different parts of an organisation fit together. As you move through the degree, the focus shifts toward applying what you’re learning in practical ways — including a final-year capstone project that brings students from different disciplines together, and the option to complete an internship for academic credit.

Here’s how these experiential opportunities really come to life:

  • Industry Internship Program (BUS 395: Business Internships):
You’ll have the chance to complete 20 days of real workplace experience with an organisation in your chosen field. It’s a genuine opportunity to turn classroom theory into practical skills, build confidence, and make valuable industry connections.

  • Final-Year Capstone Project:
This capstone brings together everything you’ve learned throughout your major. You’ll collaborate with students from other disciplines on a real business challenge, helping you sharpen your teamwork, problem-solving, and project-management skills.

  • Business Analytics Major:
If you choose this path, you’ll get hands-on practice with tools like SQL and learn how to work with large datasets. The goal is to help you understand business problems through data and make informed, strategic decisions — exactly the kind of skills employers look for.

  • Sustainable Business Major:
This major focuses on tackling real-world issues such as climate change, sustainability, and modern slavery. You’ll apply your knowledge in practical scenarios — sometimes live, sometimes simulated — to create solutions that have meaningful impact.

  • Dedicated Industry Support:
UOW’s Faculty of Business & Law maintains strong connections with industry partners. Their Business Internship Team helps students find placements, runs career-readiness workshops, and supports you through everything from writing your resume to preparing for interviews.

  • Flexible Study Options:
Several majors are also available through distance delivery, allowing you to participate in real-time classes, discussions, and group activities even if you’re studying from a regional or remote location.
