Bachelor of Business Bachelor of Laws

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Technology Sydney

Program Overview

This combined Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Laws at UTS is a powerful way to build both commercial savvy and legal insight. It’s ideal for students who dream of navigating the world of business with a solid grounding in law — preparing you to solve real-world problems with analytical rigor and ethical clarity.

Curriculum Structure

First Year:
You’ll begin by laying the foundations in key business areas — taking subjects like Accounting and Accountability, Economics for Business, People and Organisations, and Responsible Evidence-Based Decisions. At the same time, you’ll start your legal journey with Foundations of Law and Ethics, Law & Justice, exploring how law shapes society and business.

Second Year:
This year, your law studies deepen with core legal units covering Contracts, Torts, Criminal Law, and Constitutional Law. On the business side, you’ll further develop your understanding with courses such as Accounting, Business & Society, learning how companies can create positive social impact.

Third Year:
By now, you’ll choose a business major — perhaps Marketing, Finance, Human Resources or another area — and start specialising. You’ll also continue with law courses focused on Commercial Law, Administrative Law, and International Law, bridging your growing business expertise with legal frameworks that operate globally.

Fourth Year:
In your fourth year, you explore more advanced and nuanced legal topics. Expect to engage with Equity & Trusts, Property Law, and a legal theory unit of your choice — for example, Jurisprudence or Gender Law — helping you reflect deeply on how law is interpreted and applied.

Fifth Year:
In the final year, you wrap up any remaining core or major business units and take elective law subjects. If you’re interested in cutting-edge fields, you can opt for the Legal Futures & Technology major, tackling units like Technology Law, Policy & Ethics and an applied project in innovation and law.

Focus Areas:
Business strategy, corporate governance, commercial law, legal ethics, innovation in law

Learning Outcomes:
Become a business-minded legal thinker who understands how law intersects with commerce, making you ready for roles that demand both corporate acumen and legal insight.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
This dual degree meets the academic requirements for admission to legal practice in New South Wales — meaning after your degree, you’re well-placed to take up the practical legal training (PLT) required to qualify as a lawyer. Alongside that, your business major gives you practical, industry-relevant skills for the corporate world.

Reputation (Employability):
UTS is highly regarded for producing job-ready graduates, and its combined business-law degree is especially well respected. The university consistently ranks strongly in global league tables, and employers value how UTS grads bring a real-world, interdisciplinary mindset to business, consulting, legal roles, and more.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From your very first year, this dual degree doesn’t just hand you textbooks — it brings business and law to life. You build solid foundations in accounting, economics, and ethics, while also discovering how the law quietly shapes almost every business decision. Over five years, you move beyond theory and step straight into how law is practiced today: you learn through hands-on activities, use emerging legal technology, and solve the kinds of problems real professionals deal with. By the time you graduate, you don’t just understand the industry — you’ve already worked in it.

Here are some of the experiential learning opportunities built into the program:

Transdisciplinary Electives:
You’ll choose an elective that throws you into a cross-disciplinary challenge with students from other fields. Together, you’ll tackle genuine problems set by industry partners — the kind companies and communities are actually trying to solve right now.

Legal Futures & Technology Major:
If you’re interested in the future of law, this major lets you dive into areas like technology policy, digital disruption, and innovation. Through capstone subjects such as “Technology Law, Policy and Ethics” and the “Applied Project in Law, Innovation & Technology,” you get to explore emerging tech and even build practical solutions.

Internships & Clerkships:
Throughout the degree, you’ll have opportunities to step into real legal environments — whether that’s a summer clerkship, an internship with a firm, or experience alongside in-house counsel or community legal centres. It’s a genuine chance to understand how law functions day to day.

Hands-on Social Justice Work:
Through the Brennan Justice & Leadership Program, you can volunteer in community justice initiatives and develop leadership skills while making a meaningful impact. It’s a powerful way to apply what you learn while giving back.

Law-Tech Innovation Challenge:
You’ll have the chance to take part in experiences like the Allens-Neota Law Tech Challenge, where you work with teammates to design legal-tech tools — often apps or digital solutions that improve access to justice. It’s practical, creative, and incredibly relevant to where the industry is heading.

Moot Courts:
You’ll practise your advocacy skills in real mooting competitions and purpose-built courtrooms, learning how to argue, persuade, and think on your feet — just like a lawyer would.

Practical Legal Training (PLT):
Your degree covers the academic requirements needed to practise law in NSW. And if you choose to complete the Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice, you can integrate your PLT directly into your study pathway, making the transition from student to professional even smoother.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating with a Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from UTS really gives you the best of both worlds. You walk away with solid legal training and the kind of business mindset employers love. It’s a combination that opens doors across industries — and sets you up for a career that’s flexible, future-proof, and genuinely impactful.

Here are some of the roles graduates commonly move into:

  • Corporate lawyer or in-house commercial counsel

  • Legal adviser within government or regulatory agencies

  • Management or strategy consultant

  • Business-focused roles in accounting, finance, marketing, or human resources

What this means for you in real life:

Practical, career-ready legal experience
UTS Law really leans into hands-on learning. Through its in-house legal clinics, summer clerkships, and opportunities to work alongside real legal professionals, you start building genuine experience long before graduation. It’s the kind of practical edge employers immediately recognise.

A business major that matches your goals
The business side of your degree is incredibly flexible. You can tailor your major — whether that’s finance, HR, marketing, international business, or another area — so you graduate with a skill set that points you straight toward the career you want.

Learning connected to industry
UTS’s Transdisciplinary Electives let you collaborate on real problems provided by industry partners. It’s a chance to develop innovation and problem-solving skills while growing a network of contacts that often lead to internships or job opportunities.

A degree that meets professional law requirements
This program covers the academic requirements needed to become a lawyer in New South Wales. Once you finish your degree, you can complete practical legal training through UTS’s own PLT program to take that final step toward admission.

Strong graduate outcomes
UTS Law graduates consistently move into employment soon after finishing their studies. The combination of industry experience, a strong reputation, and practical learning really does pay off.

Future-focused options
If you’re interested in where law meets technology, you can choose to major in Legal Futures and Technology. It’s a fantastic way to build skills in an area that’s becoming essential as firms adapt to emerging tech.

Further Academic Progression

If you find yourself wanting to dig deeper into research or specialise further, UTS gives you clear pathways. You can take on an Honours stream — especially within the law component — and complete a research thesis. From there, you’re well-positioned for higher degree research like a Master’s or even a PhD.

If you prefer a more professional route, you can complete the Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice (PLT) to qualify for admission as a practising lawyer. Or if you’d rather lean into the business side, you can move into postgraduate study such as an MBA.
