Bachelor of Business (Professional)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Swinburne University of Technology

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Business Information Technology (Professional) at Swinburne equips you with a powerful blend of business insight and technical expertise. It’s perfect for students who want to design and deliver IT systems that solve real business challenges — and who want to graduate with solid, paid industry experience.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year, you'll lay the foundation: you explore financial decision-making through Financial Information for Decision Making (ACC10007), understand data flows in Data Management and Analytics (INF10025), discover how business is transformed by technology in Business Digitalisation (INF10024), and pick up programming skills in Programming Concepts (ICT10013). In the second semester, you’ll work on a real-world brief with your peers in the First Year Industry Project (INF10026), learn to lead and manage with Contemporary Management Principles (MGT10009), and understand how to analyze and design systems via Systems Analysis and Design (INF20029) plus Cloud Approaches for Enterprise Systems (INF20030).

Year 2
Year two brings more advanced, professionally relevant learning. You’ll build your professional mindset in Professional Capabilities for a Digital World (INF20028) and deepen your technical business understanding with units such as Cyber Security for Business (INF20031) and Business Process Modelling (INF30035). At the same time, you'll study Organisational Behaviour (MGT20007) to sharpen your teamwork, leadership, and managerial skills.

Year 3
This is your hands-on year: you’ll complete two integrated professional placement units — Integrated Professional Placement A (INF20019) and B (INF20020) — alongside industry-based work experience units WEI20001 and WEI20002. This 12-month (or two 6-month) placement gives you real responsibility, a foot in the door, and credit toward your degree.

Year 4
In your final year, you’ll apply what you’ve learned in advanced technical and business-focused subjects. You dive into Business Intelligence and Data Visualisation (INF30004), lead projects in IT Program and Project Management (INF30033), and critically evaluate technology’s impact in Governing Digital Technologies (INF30032). The program culminates with a collaborative, real-world Business Digitalisation Industry Project (INF30027) where you’ll deliver a solution for a real partner.

Focus Areas:
Business-tech innovation, systems design, data intelligence, and leadership.

Learning Outcomes:
You’ll graduate able to design, analyze, and implement IT systems within business contexts; lead digital projects; manage risks; and communicate solutions effectively to non-technical and technical stakeholders.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
This degree is accredited at the professional level by the Australian Computer Society (ACS), meaning it meets industry standards and is well-recognized in the tech sector — a real plus for your future career.

Reputation (Employability Rankings):
Swinburne is ranked in the top 300 globally for Business and Economics, and is especially known for its outstanding support and graduate salary outcomes — giving you confidence that this degree can really pay off in the job market.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The Bachelor of Business Information Technology (Professional) at Swinburne is one of those programs that really sets you up for the real world. Instead of just learning concepts in a lecture room, you’ll actually use your skills in real companies, get paid for your work, and see how business and technology blend in day-to-day operations. Across your four years, you’ll develop your analytical, programming, and systems-design abilities — and then apply them directly through structured industry placements. By the time you graduate, you’ll have hands-on experience, stronger confidence, and a professional network that genuinely gives you a head start.

Here are the major experiential learning opportunities woven into the degree:

  • Paid Professional Placements: You’ll have the chance to complete a 6-month or full 12-month paid placement with a real organisation. These aren’t just “extras” — they count toward your degree through Work Experience in Industry A & B and Integrated Professional Placement A & B, making your on-the-job learning part of your academic journey.

  • Work-Integrated Learning with Academic Support: Throughout your placement, you’ll be guided by both an industry supervisor and a Swinburne academic. This means you’re not just doing tasks — you’re reflecting on what you’re learning, connecting it back to your coursework, and building solid professional habits.

  • Business Information Systems Industry Project: In your final year, you’ll work with a small team on a real brief set by an industry partner. It’s a chance to solve an actual business-technology problem and show employers what you can do.

  • Professional Internship Option: If you want even more real-world experience, there’s a Professional Internship unit where you take on meaningful workplace responsibilities while continuing to receive academic guidance.

All of these experiences help you grow not just as a tech-savvy professional, but as someone who can communicate clearly, lead a project, and contribute confidently in any business environment.

Progression & Future Opportunities

What Your Future Could Look Like

By the time you finish this degree, you’ll have the kind of blended business-and-tech skill set that employers genuinely look for. Graduates usually walk straight into roles where they get to solve real problems, make strategic decisions, and work with technology in a meaningful way. You’ll see people from this program becoming:

  • Business Analysts who help organisations understand their needs and turn them into smart tech solutions

  • Software Developers building applications, tools, and systems

  • Systems Analysts designing and improving the information systems businesses rely on

  • Project Managers guiding tech projects from idea to completion

  • Security Analysts helping protect data and systems

  • Network Coordinators keeping organisations connected and running smoothly

Here’s what this actually means for you:

Work-Integrated Learning You Can Count On

This degree doesn’t just talk about industry experience — it guarantees it. You’ll complete either two six-month placements or one full 12-month paid placement as part of your course. It’s not a token internship; it’s real work, with real responsibility, in real companies.

Strong Industry Partnerships

Swinburne collaborates with organisations like KPMG, PwC, Deloitte, NAB, Siemens, EY and other major players. That means your placements and project work don’t feel random — they happen in environments where your learning genuinely matters.

Accreditation & Recognition

The course is professionally accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) at the professional level, which instantly gives your qualification credibility in both the IT and business worlds.

Graduate Outcomes That Actually Pay Off

Many graduates go on to step into leadership roles because the degree isn’t just about technical skills — it also builds your confidence in managing people, projects, and technology. It’s designed for students who want to grow into innovators and decision-makers.

Support and Services at Swinburne

You’re never left to figure things out alone. Swinburne’s support teams and career services help you prepare for placements, build your resume, and navigate the professional world. Combined with the guaranteed placement, you’re building a strong career foundation from day one. And the fact that Swinburne is ranked #1 in Melbourne for graduate salary one year after graduation says a lot about the value of your degree.

Further Academic Progression

If you decide you want to dive deeper after your bachelor’s, there are clear pathways. You could take on an Honours year in Information Systems or IT, which is great if you’re curious about research or want a more advanced technical edge.

You can also explore master’s programs — for instance, a Master of Social Impact with a focus on Business Information Systems gives you a blend of IT expertise, project management, leadership, and social innovation.

And because the degree is ACS-accredited, you’ll be well-positioned for specialised postgraduate areas like cybersecurity, enterprise systems, or professional certifications down the track.

In short: this degree isn’t just a combination of business and IT on paper. It’s a genuinely thoughtful pathway that connects both worlds. You graduate with solid technical skills, strong business understanding, real industry experience, and a respected qualification. If you’re aiming for a career that opens doors across tech, strategy, and leadership, this is a very smart move.
