Bachelors of Business Management / Economics

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Queensland

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Business Management / Economics at the University of Queensland is a powerful dual-degree that helps you master both the art of managing real businesses and the science of economic thinking. It’s perfect for someone who wants to lead organisations, make strategic decisions, and understand how markets, policy, and people interact.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year, you'll build a strong foundation in business and economics through core courses such as Accounting for Decision Making (ACCT1101), Economics for Business (ECON1011), Introduction to Management (MGTS1301), and Organisational Behaviour (MGTS1601). You’ll also explore digital business systems with Transforming Business with Information Systems (BISM1201), and round out the year with Foundations of Marketing (MKTG1501) and Business Law (LAWS1100). This semester-by-semester mix ensures you’re grounded in both business fundamentals and economic logic, while you're already applying what you learn to real-world situations and cases.

Year 2
In your second year, the studies become more strategic and analytical. You’ll take courses like Introduction to Strategic Thinking (ECON2070), and Economics of Business Strategy (ECON2410), which help you see how economic theory drives long-term business planning. You’ll also dive into macroeconomics with The Macroeconomy & Business Conditions (ECON2420), plus innovation-focused economics in Economics of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (ECON2540). Alongside these, you’ll take elective or major courses, giving you room to shape your path while challenging yourself with higher-level concepts.

Year 3
In your third year, you step into the big-picture world. You might study Managerial Economics (ECON3430) to analyze business decisions through an economic lens, or Competition Policy & Regulation (ECON3440) to understand how markets are shaped by rules. You’ll also explore global finance and institutions in Financial Markets & Institutions (ECON3210), or examine regional economic dynamics in Understanding China (ECON3820). These advanced units equip you to tackle real business and policy challenges, often with hands-on or project-based learning.

Focus Areas:
Business management, micro- and macroeconomics, strategic thinking, organisational behaviour, innovation economics.

Learning Outcomes:
You’ll graduate with strong analytical skills, an ability to apply economic models to business challenges, and the confidence to lead and make data-informed decisions in varied industries.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
This program is deeply industry-connected — you’ll work on projects and placements with real businesses, and the curriculum is co-designed with industry experts so what you learn is directly relevant to the working world.

Reputation (Employability Rankings):
UQ is consistently ranked among the top universities globally for business and economics, placing very highly in rankings like the Times Higher Education and QS — so your degree will carry serious weight when you graduate and enter the job market.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

If you choose this program, you won’t just study business and economics — you’ll actually practice it. UQ has intentionally designed the curriculum so you’re constantly moving between theory and real-world application. Instead of learning concepts in isolation, you’ll use them while working on real cases, consulting for actual companies, and stepping into workplaces where your ideas genuinely matter. It’s practical, grounded, and very much connected to how businesses operate and how economic decisions play out every day.

Here’s how you’ll build that hands-on edge:

Final-year capstone courses (RBUS3888 / RBUS3999)
In your final year, you’ll dive into a major consulting-style project where you work directly with an industry partner. You and your team take on a real business challenge — the kind companies are trying to solve right now — and develop solutions with guidance from UQ mentors. It’s a meaningful way to wrap up your degree and prove to yourself that you can deliver in a professional environment.

Professional placements and internships
Through UQ’s Work-Integrated Learning framework, you’ll complete at least 120 hours of supervised, credit-earning workplace experience. It’s not a simulated exercise — you’ll be in an actual organisation, contributing to real tasks, building confidence, and understanding how your classroom learning translates into the day-to-day world of work.

Economics internship opportunities (ECON3380)
If you choose an economics major, you’ll have access to a dedicated internship course where your work in an economic, analytical, or policy-focused role counts directly toward your degree. It’s a strong way to gain niche, relevant experience before you graduate.

Industry consulting projects
Across a full 13-week semester, you can join a project team that partners with a corporate client. You’ll analyse their challenge, gather insights, and recommend strategies — all while being guided by an experienced UQ advisor. It’s a genuine workplace-style collaboration that sharpens your problem-solving and communication skills.

Global study experiences
If you’re keen to broaden your worldview, you can spend a semester abroad, join a short-term global program, or even complete an international internship. These overseas experiences count toward your degree and help you see how business and economics operate across different cultures and markets.

Internships for credit through the BEL Faculty
The Business, Economics and Law Faculty also supports internships that allow you to earn academic credit while gaining practical industry experience. It’s a straightforward way to blend study with professional growth.

If you’re someone who learns best by rolling up your sleeves — stepping into companies, solving real problems, and working with real data — this program gives you plenty of space to do exactly that.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from this program are well placed to build a meaningful career straight after uni or deepen their expertise — whichever path you choose. With its blend of business and economics, you’ll graduate with strong analytical skills and a versatile toolkit to navigate complex decisions in real-world organizations.

Typical roles that many grads move into include:

  • Business analyst — interpreting data, making strategy recommendations

  • Management consultant — helping companies solve business-level challenges

  • Economist / economic policy advisor — working in public policy or private sector to forecast trends or advise on economic strategy

  • Business development manager — growing partnerships, entering new markets, or driving internal growth

Here’s what this means for you:

  • UQ Career Support: Through UQ’s Business School, you'll have access to the BEL (Business, Economics & Law) Careers & Employability team — they offer one-on-one career advice, employer workshops, and help you prepare your resume and interview skills.

  • UQ Employability Award: This bonus program lets you build up relevant experience while studying (volunteering, work, projects) — it’s a structured way to make your degree more ‘job-ready’.

  • Hands-on Industry Exposure: The degree includes embedded Work Integrated Learning (WIL). In capstone courses you can either do a placement or take on a real consulting project with external partners — so you're not just learning theory; you're applying it.

  • Strong Industry Links: Through UQ’s economics school, you’ll be plugged into networks with major organisations — from big consulting firms like KPMG to institutions like the Reserve Bank of Australia and international development agencies.

  • Solid Employability Outcomes: According to UQ’s recent fast-facts, about 81% of their bachelor graduates secure full-time employment after graduating — that’s in line with or a little above national averages.

  • Reputation & Accreditation: UQ Business / Economics programs are highly ranked and respected, which gives your resume strong credibility.

Further Academic Progression:

If you want to go deeper academically, UQ gives you very good options. You can enroll in an Honours year through the Business School, where you’ll work closely with faculty on research — this can sharpen your analytical and problem-solving skills and make you very competitive for research roles or further study.

From there, you could consider a PhD, or even a Master’s in fields like Economics, Public Policy, or Business Analytics. The strong foundation from this undergrad degree means you’ll be well-prepared for advanced coursework and research, or to pivot into a specialized area.
