Bachelors of Business Management / Education (Secondary)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Queensland

Program Overview

If you've ever dreamed of teaching business or economics in a secondary school — while building a real business foundation yourself — the Bachelor of Business Management / Education (Secondary) at UQ is made for you. Over four years, you’ll gain solid business knowledge and practical classroom experience, preparing you to lead and inspire future young minds.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year, you’ll get grounded in core business fundamentals: courses like Introduction to Management, Accounting for Decision Making, Organisational Behaviour, and Foundations of Marketing. Alongside this, your education stream introduces you to the heart of teaching with units such as A Sociological Orientation to Education and Learning and Development for Educators. You'll blend lectures, tutorials, and early school visits, so you're already thinking like a teacher while learning how business works.

Year 2
During your second year, the business side deepens: you’ll take courses such as Economics of Business Strategy, The Macroeconomy and Business Conditions, and Economics of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. On the education side, your learning evolves too — with “Teachers as Educational Innovators and Agents of Change” and “Indigenous Knowledge and Education” helping you understand diverse school communities and inclusive teaching practices. It’s a year of growth, where you begin to see how business content and educational theory intersect.

Year 3
In year three, you move into more advanced business theory with courses like Managerial Economics, Financial Markets & Institutions, and Understanding China. Your education courses — such as Numeracy Across the Curriculum and Building Inclusive Secondary Classrooms — strengthen your ability to teach complex concepts to diverse learners. This is also when you start building professional educator knowledge, preparing for your final year in schools.

Year 4 (Professional Year)
Your final year is a full professional teaching immersion. You’ll take courses like Assessment for Learning and Teaching, Developing Professional Practice, and Teachers as Researchers, paired with curriculum studies in Business: Curriculum Studies and Economics: Curriculum Studies. This is when theory meets practice — you’ll spend significant time in real classrooms, putting your education and business learning into action as you prepare for teacher registration.

Business Economics, Secondary Education (Business & Economics)

Learning Outcomes:
Students will graduate able to teach business and economics with confidence, backed by strong subject knowledge, classroom skills, and practical experience.

Through intensive professional placements and curriculum coursework, you’ll be ready to meet the requirements for teacher registration and can apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers once you graduate.

Reputation (Employability Rankings):
UQ consistently ranks among the top universities globally — and in business and economics, it earns strong recognition. Combine that with its excellent reputation in education, and you'll be graduating from a program that’s not only respected but also highly employable.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

That’s a fantastic program to consider. The Bachelor of Business Management / Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at UQ is designed to prepare you for the real world. You’ll gain a strong foundation in business and economics while also learning practical teaching skills — not just in lectures, but in actual classrooms. Through hands-on workshops, school visits, and long-term supervised placements, you’ll see exactly what it’s like to teach business and economics to high school students. By the time you graduate, you won’t just have knowledge on paper — you’ll have the confidence and experience to step straight into a classroom.

Here’s how you’ll actually learn by doing in this program:

  • Professional school placements: You complete at least 80 days of supervised teaching in schools, giving you real, on-the-ground experience in classrooms.

  • Education courses with practical strategies: Classes like Learning and Development for Educators, Numeracy across the Curriculum, and Teachers as Researchers combine theory with strategies you can actually use in teaching.

  • Specialised business teaching courses: In Business: Curriculum Studies and Economics: Curriculum Studies, you’ll dive deep into how to teach these subjects effectively to secondary students.

  • Business foundations: Through courses like Introduction to Management, Organisational Behaviour, and Foundations of Marketing, you’ll build strong subject knowledge that you can pass on confidently to your students.

  • Global and flexible opportunities: You can study overseas or take electives, gaining exposure to international business practices and broadening your perspective.

  • Rural and regional placements: If you’re interested, UQ supports teaching placements in regional schools, and financial assistance may be available for travel and accommodation.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from this dual‑degree program puts you in a really powerful position: you’re not just qualified to teach, but you also carry solid business‑management expertise. That makes you versatile and highly employable — whether you choose to stay in education or step into the corporate world.

Here are some typical job roles for graduates:

  • Secondary school business teacher

  • Secondary school economics teacher

  • Curriculum coordinator or head of department (business/economics)

  • Educational consultant or policy advisor (especially in business education)

Here’s what this means for you:

  • Career support from UQ: You’ll have access to the Business, Economics & Law (BEL) Careers & Employability Team, who help with internships, career planning, and connecting with employers.

  • Strong graduate employability: UQ’s overall full-time employment rate for undergraduates is about 81%, according to its own reported data.

  • Industry‑relevant training: Because you’re doing business and education, you benefit from UQ’s deep ties with both the education sector and the business world. This dual exposure makes networking more natural — in schools and in companies.

  • Accreditation and long-term value: Completing this dual degree gives you teacher‑registration eligibility (you’ll be ready for roles in Queensland schools and beyond), plus a business credential that’s respected globally.

  • Positive graduation outcomes: Data shows that UQ’s business & management graduates have a good full-time employment rate and average starting salaries (for similar courses, around AUD 58,000 in some reports).

Further Academic Progression:

After finishing this program, you’ve got a couple of strong pathways if you’re thinking of further study. One option is to add an Honours year through UQ’s Business School, which deepens your research and analytical skills and could be a stepping stone to academic or consulting roles. Another route is a Master of Teaching (Secondary) if you want to further strengthen your teaching credentials or qualify to teach in different regions or specialized schools.
