Bachelors of Music / Business Management

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Queensland

Program Overview

Program Overview:
This Bachelor of Music / Business Management at The University of Queensland is designed for creative-minded individuals who want to combine their passion for music with high-level business skills. You’ll learn how to craft meaningful musical work, and at the same time understand branding, strategy, leadership and the commercial side of the creative industries.

Curriculum Structure:
Year 1 – In your first year you’ll dive into foundational courses such as Performance Studies, Musicianship 1 and Introduction to Management. You’ll begin practising as a musician, explore basic business concepts and build a strong understanding of both sides of the discipline: your creative self and your strategic self.
Year 2 – During year two you might study courses like Creative Music Production, Accounting for Decision Making and Marketing Strategy. Here you’ll begin creating and producing musical work, while also learning how to interpret financial reports, commands of marketing and how to translate your music into a sustainable business endeavour.
Year 3 – In your third year the program deepens with units such as Ensemble Studies, Business Information Systems and Entrepreneurship and Innovation. You’ll collaborate on larger music projects, adopt technology-driven business models and perhaps begin working with live industry partners or client briefs.
Year 4 – In your final year you will take advanced courses such as Capstone Music Business Project, Strategic Leadership in the Creative Industries and Advanced Musicianship. This is the year you bring everything together: you’ll execute a real-world music-business venture, build your professional portfolio and prepare to step confidently into the industry.

Focus Areas: Combining music performance, composition and production with business strategy, marketing, leadership and entrepreneurship.
Learning Outcomes: Graduates will be equipped to create high-quality musical work, lead creative teams, understand market forces, manage business operations and launch ventures in the arts and entertainment industries.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation): This program blends the creative arts and business disciplines, and the business component aligns with accreditation standards of the UQ Business School—so you’re gaining real, industry-relevant credentials to back your artistry with strategy.
Reputation (Employability Rankings): The University of Queensland is ranked in the world’s top 50 universities and noted for excellence in both arts and business, which means your qualification is recognised globally and backed by strong institutional reputation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Great choice asking about this — the Bachelor of Music / Business Management at the University of Queensland is genuinely one of those programs that sets you up with both creative confidence and practical business strength. Instead of keeping music and business in separate boxes, UQ makes sure you’re learning them side by side, in real studios and real workplace-style environments. By the time you finish, you’re not just “studying music” or “studying business” — you actually understand how the music world functions as an industry, and how to position yourself as a leader within it.

Here’s how you learn by doing in this program:

Work-Integrated Learning (WIL):
You won’t just sit in lectures — key courses like RBUS3888 and RBUS3999 push you into real-world problem-solving. That means collaborating with industry partners on live music-business projects or taking on a professional placement where your classroom ideas get applied directly in an actual workplace. It’s very much “learn it today, use it tomorrow.”

Music Production Studios and Labs:
In courses like Creative Music Making & Studio Recording (MUSC3020), you spend serious time in professional studio environments. You’ll work with real recording gear, music-technology tools, mixing setups, and hands-on creative processes. These labs feel much closer to working in a modern studio than sitting in a classroom.

Studio Recording Intensives:
Part of this course includes full-on recording intensive sessions — sometimes outside normal class times — where you rotate through real studio roles. You’ll manage recording setups, session planning, and technical workflows just like you would in a professional recording environment. It’s one of the clearest “this is what the industry is actually like” experiences in the degree.

Auditions & Performance Integration:
Because the program starts with an audition and interview, you’re surrounded by musicians who take performance seriously. Throughout the program, you keep building those performance skills while learning how musical decisions fit into the business landscape. It’s not just about playing well — it’s about understanding how your artistry operates in a wider strategic context.

Flexible Business Majors with Real-World Application:
On the business side, you can tailor your studies through majors like Innovation & Entrepreneurship, International Business, or Business Information Systems. These aren’t abstract theory-heavy paths — they include very applied coursework, like managing real business data or working through machine-learning applications as they appear in business environments.

Industry Connections Through UQ Business School:
The UQ Business School has strong industry engagement, which means you get regular access to guest speakers, networking events, and mentorship opportunities. Plus, the BEL Careers & Employability Team helps you find placements and internships, so you graduate with both a portfolio and real-world experience.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of this program don’t just leave with musical skills — they also understand how businesses operate. That combination means you’re well-prepared to build a career that’s both creative and commercially savvy.

Typical roles you might step into after graduating include:

  • Music director or production manager

  • Arts administrator or event manager (especially within the music or festival scene)

  • Music critic, reviewer, or journalist

  • Business development or marketing roles in music companies, record labels, or creative agencies

Here’s what this means for you:

  • Career Support & Employability: UQ’s Careers & Employability team is very active. They help you develop your professional skills, connect with industry through internships and work placements, and guide you in how to reflect on your experiences in a way that makes sense to employers.

  • Real Industry Experience Built In: The curriculum includes Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) in capstone courses — you can do live projects with industry partners or full professional placements. This isn’t just academic theory; you actually work on real business challenges.

  • Strong Employment Outcomes: UQ is highly regarded for employability. Their Business, Economics & Law faculty ranks very strongly, and UQ undergraduates report excellent full-time employment rates a few years after graduation.

  • Industry Connections & Partnerships: Because the music business is inherently entrepreneurial and relationship-driven, UQ’s ties with creative organisations, festivals, and businesses help you network and potentially land roles in arts administration, events, or media.

  • Long-Term Value: The degree’s interdisciplinary nature means you’re not pigeonholed into just performance or just management. That flexibility is valuable if you want to pivot later — maybe starting your own music venture, working for a label, or even combining performance with freelance business consulting.

  • Professional Recognition: On graduation, you may be eligible for membership with prominent organisations like the Australian Human Resources Institute or the Australian Marketing Institute, depending on your major — which adds to your credibility in the industry.

Further Academic Progression:

If you decide you want to dive deeper after your bachelor’s, there are several paths:

  • You could go for a Master’s in Music Industry Studies, Arts Management, or even a more business-focused postgraduate degree like an MBA — this would amplify both your creative and leadership skills.

  • UQ’s strong research environment also gives you the option to undertake Honours or a research degree, if you’re interested in topics like creative entrepreneurship, cultural policy, or music business innovation.

  • Alternatively, you could specialise further in business areas (e.g., innovation, marketing, entrepreneurship) through UQ’s postgraduate business programs, bringing together what you learned in undergrad with advanced strategic and analytical expertise.

In short: this program doesn’t force you to choose between art and business — it empowers you to do both. If you’re passionate about music and want to make a real impact in the business of music, UQ’s mix of practical experience, strong employability support, and flexibility makes it a very solid fit.
