Bachelor of Business majoring in Real Estate

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Adelaide

Program Overview

If you’re curious about what makes property markets tick — whether it’s buying, selling, leasing or developing real estate — the Bachelor of Business majoring in Real Estate at Adelaide University gives you the tools and confidence to dive in. This program blends solid business fundamentals (economics, accounting, marketing, leadership) with hands‑on real estate knowledge — ideal for anyone who sees themselves working in property, investing, managing, or even launching their own real estate venture.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year you’ll build the groundwork: courses such as Accounting for Decision Makers, Management, Organisations and Leadership and Business Law help you understand how businesses run financially and structurally. At the same time you’ll get your first taste of real estate through a unit like Discovering Opportunities in Property, which begins to show how property markets, demand and opportunities work in real life. You’ll also study basic marketing (for example Marketing Principles), giving you a sense of how real estate is positioned, promoted and sold.

Year 2
This year you begin to specialise more deeply. Through units like Property Asset Management and Property Economics, you’ll explore how properties are valued, managed and maintained — and what economic forces shape demand and value across different markets. Alongside, you’ll take Property and Real Estate Law, learning the legal and regulatory aspects that govern land, leases, transactions and agency work — essential for anyone serious about working or investing in real estate.

Year 3
In your final year you’ll bring everything together and prepare to step into the real world. The course Real Estate Practice lets you apply business and property knowledge in more practical scenarios — almost like a simulation of real estate careers. Meanwhile, Building Evaluation of Property will train you to assess and appraise real assets, and coursework around finance, entrepreneurship and strategic management helps you understand property as a business: what makes a development project succeed, how to build a property portfolio, or even start your own agency. Often there’s a professional placement or work‑integrated learning component, so you graduate not just with theory, but also real‑world exposure and confidence.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

When you study the Bachelor of Business with a major in Real Estate at our university, you’ll do more than just learn theory — you’ll develop practical skills that prepare you for a real career in real estate from day one. Right from your first year, you’ll be working with real-world scenarios, exploring buying, selling, leasing, property valuation, development, and investment. The program blends solid business foundations like accounting, economics, marketing, law, and strategy with specialised real estate knowledge, so you’ll understand not just how the market works, but why properties hold value, how markets shift, and what real clients need. You’ll learn to analyse economic and geographic data, assess property values, navigate regulations, and even plan the launch of your own real estate agency — all through case studies, market analysis, and projects designed to mirror industry practice.

Our campus is designed to make learning engaging and practical. From purpose-built lecture theatres and modern learning spaces to libraries, technology zones, and hands-on workshops that simulate real work environments, you’ll have everything you need to study, collaborate, and connect. Plus, our 24/7 online learning platform ensures you can stay on top of resources and keep in touch with peers, instructors, and the industry no matter where you are.

Here’s how you’ll gain hands-on experience:

  • Industry placements and internships: In your second and third years, you’ll have the chance to work directly in real estate settings, experiencing the day-to-day operations of the industry firsthand.

  • Real-world projects and case studies: Your coursework uses genuine market data and property scenarios, helping you learn how to navigate investment, development, valuation, and agency management.

  • Specialised real estate courses: For example, in the Real Estate Practice course, you’ll learn how to set up and manage an agency, handle legal and ethical responsibilities, and create marketing plans for different types of properties.

  • Property market analysis and valuation methods: You’ll explore economic and geographic property trends, use valuation techniques, and evaluate investments — giving you the skills needed for roles in property management, development, investment, and agency operations.

  • Flexible electives and international exposure: Want a broader business perspective? You can tailor your degree with electives, pursue a double major, or even join an international exchange program to see real estate from a global viewpoint.

By combining practical placements, hands-on projects, specialised courses, and optional international experiences, this program ensures that when you graduate, you’re not just knowledgeable — you’re confident, capable, and ready to make your mark in the real estate industry.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Just to start — graduates from this program end up well‑prepared to enter the property world, whether that’s working for a firm or striking out on your own. Many go straight into roles where they’re dealing with real estate deals, investments, developments or management.

Typical job roles include:

  • Portfolio manager (handling property investment portfolios)

  • Property manager or property asset manager

  • Property developer

  • Real estate agent (or even establishing/owning an agency)

  • Sales and leasing consultant

Here’s what this means for you:

  • Support from the university: Adelaide has built‑in “Work Integrated Learning” across second and third years — meaning internships and real‑world placements are part of your study plan. This gives you practical exposure and a chance to build networks while still studying.

  • Breadth + specialisation: You get a solid grounding in core business — accounting, economics, marketing, management, strategy, law — plus dedicated real estate courses: property law, valuation, property economics, facility management, development, and real estate practice. This gives you both business versatility and deep real‑estate know‑how.

  • Flexibility & opportunities: The degree offers electives and even the option to double‑major (in another business area), or take part in an international exchange. So if you wish, you can broaden your skill set and career options beyond just real estate.

  • Strong industry relevance & demand: Given global (and Australian) housing and property market trends — increased demand for housing, sustainable property development, repurposing buildings — real estate expertise is increasingly relevant. That aligns well with the kind of career paths this degree supports.

  • Real-world readiness: Because the curriculum covers everything from valuation and market analysis to agency setup and legal/regulatory understanding, once you graduate you’ll be ready to hit the ground running — whether working for a firm or launching your own small real‑estate venture.

Further Academic Progression:
If after finishing your bachelor degree you feel like diving deeper — say into property investment, real estate finance, or advanced property economics — you could consider postgraduate studies later (e.g. a master in property, real estate finance or related business/finance masters). With the strong business fundamentals and real estate grounding from your bachelor, you’d be well prepared.

Plus, because the bachelor degree gives you solid skills in business, law, economics and analysis, you would also be in a good position to pivot into other related fields — property analytics, real‑estate finance, consultancy around property investment, or even broader business/management postgraduate studies if you decide to broaden your scope.
