Bachelor of Business

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Tasmania

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Business (B3A) at the University of Tasmania offers a practical, hands‑on education in business, tailored for students who want both career-ready skills and a flexible pathway. Whether you're passionate about accounting, marketing, management, or more, you’ll build strong analytical, ethical, and entrepreneurial foundations through real-world projects and industry engagement.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year, you'll dive into core business fundamentals. You’ll take courses like People and Organisations, Introduction to Markets and the Economy, Data Analysis for Business, and Accountability and Accounting. These units help you understand how businesses operate, how people collaborate, and how data drives decision-making — setting you up with a strong, broad-based foundation.

Year 2
In Year 2, you’ll deepen your understanding of how business works in practice. You'll explore entrepreneurship through a course like Entrepreneurship, and also study Business and Corporate Law and Business Strategy. Along the way, you’ll think through big-picture challenges like sustainability and social responsibility in business via Managerial Social Responsibility, making your learning both relevant and future-focused.

Year 3
By your final year, you’ll specialise more deeply through your chosen major (such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, or Management). Within your major, you’ll study advanced topics like auditing, financial reporting, or strategic leadership. You’ll also get to pick electives — giving you the freedom to explore your interests, round out your skills, and tailor your degree for your future career.

Focus Areas:
Accounting, Business Economics, Finance, Human Resource Management, Management, Marketing

Learning Outcomes:
Graduates will be able to analyse business problems, make data-driven decisions, lead ethically, apply strategic thinking, and adapt with resilience in changing markets.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
The Tasmanian School of Business and Economics (TSBE) is accredited by AACSB International, which is a globally respected standard — meaning your qualification is recognized by major professional bodies and employers around the world.

Reputation (Employability Rankings):
UTAS holds a strong global reputation: it’s ranked around #293 in the QS World University Rankings, which underscores its academic quality. Coupled with its real-world, industry-connected teaching approach, students graduate well-prepared and in demand.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The Bachelor of Business at the University of Tasmania is designed to give you real-world business experience, not just textbook learning. Through this degree, you don’t just study theory — you get to apply it in real businesses, work on live projects, and build a professional network while you're still a student. The strong connections UTAS has with Tasmanian industry means your classroom learning is closely tied to how business really works.

Here’s how this program builds that hands-on, career-ready experience for you:

  • Professional Placement Unit: In the Business Placement (BAA322) unit, you work on a project with a private, public, or non‑profit organisation. You’ll have a mentor from the business supporting you, and you apply what you've learned in a genuine work environment.

  • Internship Opportunities: The course includes an intensive Corporate Internship Program which lets you earn credit while working for real companies, building your experience and resume.

  • Guest Lectures & Industry Case Studies: Throughout your studies, you’ll engage with business leaders through guest sessions, and you’ll work on current, real-world business case studies drawn from Tasmanian and global companies.

  • Design Thinking and Simulations: Your learning isn’t just lectures — there’s a focus on problem-based and simulated scenarios, helping you tackle real business challenges and think like an innovator.

  • Financial Data Lab Exposure: You get access to real‑time financial data systems (like Bloomberg) that are used by global finance professionals — so you learn using exactly the kind of tools used in industry.

  • Optional Work‑Integrated Learning Units: Through the university’s work‑integrated learning framework, you can also take other electives or placements — gaining professional experience tailored to your interests.

This kind of structure means you're not just graduating with a degree — you're graduating with relevant experience, a network, and the confidence to step into a business role and make an impact.

Progression & Future Opportunities

What graduates go on to do

When you finish this degree, you’re well-positioned to step into roles like:

  • Financial Analyst or Accountant, especially if you major in Accounting

  • Business Analyst or Data Analyst, if you choose Business Analytics

  • Marketing Manager or Marketing Strategist, with a Marketing major

  • Human Resources Manager or Organizational Consultant, via Managing People & Organisations

Here’s what this means for you:

  • UTAS has a Business Placements Program, which means you’ll get hands-on work experience during your studies — this isn’t just theory, you’ll be building real connections in the business world.

  • On average, 80% of undergrad business students find full-time employment within four months of graduating, which is higher than the national average.

  • The Tasmanian School of Business and Economics (which runs this degree) has strong ties with local and national industries, giving you a network that can help when you’re job-hunting.

  • If you study Accounting, your degree is accredited with CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand, which adds credibility and global recognition.

  • UTAS also supports entrepreneurial thinking, so if you want to start something of your own, you’ll have a foundation in innovation and strategy, not just operations or finance.

Further Academic Progression:
If after your Bachelor’s you want to go further, UTAS makes that really feasible. You can pursue an Honours year in Business, which is great if you want to specialize more deeply or prepare for research. For postgraduate studies, there are options like a Master of Professional Accounting or Master of Finance. There’s even a Graduate Certificate in Business Studies (if you don’t come in with a prior degree) — completing that can give you a smooth pathway into business‑related master’s programs.

In short: this degree is flexible, well-connected to industry, and respected — whether you aim to join a large firm, consult, or build your own business, UTAS gives you a very good base.
