Established in 1890, the University of Tasmania is a public research university located in Tasmania, Australia. It was the fourth university to be established in the country. It is sandstone university and is a member of the International Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning. The University of Tasmania has three main generalist campuses: Sandy Bay, Newnham and the Cradle Coast campuses, and numerous satellite campuses.
The university comprises of 4 faculties, 1 college: College of Arts, Law and Education (School of Creative Arts; School of Humanities; School of Social Sciences; Faculty of Law; and Faculty of Education); Tasmanian School of Business and Economics; Faculty of Education; Faculty of Health (School of Medicine; School of Health Sciences); Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology (School of Physical Sciences; School of Engineering and ICT; School of Architecture and Design; School of Land and Food; and School of Biological Sciences). The university also operates 3 institutes: Australian Maritime College; Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies; and Menzies Research Institute Tasmania. It offers more than 100 undergraduate (bachelor) degrees, and more than 150 postgraduate programs from Graduate Certificates through to Masters and research programs.
The total student population at the University of Tasmania is more than 33,000 students of which over 27,800 are enrolled in the undergraduate programs. It has a student to faculty ratio of 28:1.
The university’s primary research themes include: Antarctic and Marine; Community, Place and Change; Sustainable Primary Production; Population and Health; Environment and Frontier Technologies. It was ranked in the top 10 research universities in Australia and in the top two per cent of universities worldwide in the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
