Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

James Cook University

Program Overview

Program Overview:
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at James Cook University offers a well-rounded engineering education that combines mathematics, physics, and science with real-world problem-solving. You’ll explore areas like infrastructure, energy, electronics, or smart technology while learning to design solutions that make an impact. This program is ideal for students who are curious about how things work, enjoy hands-on learning, and want to build skills for a global engineering career.

Curriculum Structure:

Year 1 — In your first year, you’ll establish a strong foundation in engineering principles through subjects such as Engineering 1 (EG1000), Computing and Sensors (EG1002), and Mathematical Foundations (MA1000). You’ll develop essential skills in statics and dynamics, electrical circuits, and mathematical techniques, preparing you for more specialised study in later years.

Year 2 — In your second year, you’ll move into more specialised material. For example, you might study Mathematics for Scientists and Engineers (MA2000), Engineering Strength of Materials (CS2001), and Thermofluid Mechanics (ME2512) if you choose mechanical engineering. This year focuses on deepening both theoretical knowledge and practical application in your chosen field.

Year 3 — The third year emphasizes systems thinking, project management, and advanced major topics. You may take units like Introduction to Systems Engineering and Project Management (EG3000) or Structural Analysis (CS3000). You’ll tackle complex design problems and apply your skills in real-world engineering contexts.

Year 4 — In your final year, you’ll complete your honours-level project and thesis through Thesis Part 1 (EG4011) and Thesis Part 2 (EG4012). You’ll also take capstone design projects and major-specific classes, such as Civil Engineering Design (CS4005) or Advanced Mechanical Engineering Design (ME4515). This year is about independent research, collaborative teamwork, and preparing for professional engineering practice.
