Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Curtin University Perth

Program Overview

The University of Wollongong (UOW) offers a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering, a dynamic four-year course of study that prepares students for the evolving demands of the engineering practice. This course equips students with a strong background in mechanical systems, materials science, thermodynamics, and engineering design, as well as problem-solving skills to confront practical mechanical challenges in a broad range of industries, such as the automotive, energy, aerospace, and manufacturing sectors.

Curriculum Structure:

The course is proportionately well-balanced between the theoretical and practical aspects so that the graduates can find a job the moment they graduate. Students will be learning:

  • Foundation Engineering Studies: These include mathematics, physics, computer studies, and fundamental engineering concepts.

  • Core Subjects of Mechanical Engineering: These involve subjects on mechanics of solids, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, dynamics, control systems, and manufacturing processes.

  • Design and Laboratory Work: Laboratory sessions and design projects are used to teach the students to apply engineering principles practically.

  • Final Year Thesis or Capstone Project: A sizeable individual or team-based project where students tackle a difficult engineering problem using the skills they have gained during the degree.

Accreditation:

The degree is professionally accredited by Engineers Australia, with national and international engineering education standards, and providing a path to Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng).

Campus Location:

UOW's main campus is located in Wollongong, New South Wales, a coastal city that is vibrant with student life and convenient access to Sydney. Mechanical engineering students have access to modern labs, workshops, and hands-on learning spaces in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the strongest aspects of mechanical engineering study at UOW is hands-on experience. Students have access to:

  • Professional Experience Program: Mandatory industry placement where students acquire worthwhile work experience.

  • Internships: Opportunity to work with local and global engineering firms, including companies in energy, defence, and manufacturing sectors.

  • Student Projects and Competitions: Participate in clubs like the UOW Motorsport team, where students conceive and compete a formula-type car, or robotics and sustainability challenges.

  • International Learning Opportunities: Foreign study with partner institutions or involvement in international engineering projects, with enhanced cross-cultural engineering skills.

Progression & Future Opportunities

UOW supports career planning through its Careers and Employability service, which offers:

  • One-on-one career guidance and planning.

  • Resume-writing workshops and interview skills training.

  • Industry guest lectures and professional contacts.

  • In-campus career fairs with top engineering employers.

Employability

Alumni are being pursued by diverse industries including automotive, aerospace, biomedical, energy, robotics, construction, mining, and even consulting. Alumni have moved to work with top organizations like BlueScope Steel, Thales, BHP, Honeywell, and Siemens, just to name a few.

Future Academic Progression:

Graduates can also choose to continue pursuing studies with Master's degrees in areas such as Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Renewable Energy, or even shift into the area of Engineering Management or Artificial Intelligence. Research opportunities are also available at UOW for those pursuing a PhD or honours research stream.
