Curtin University Perth

Curtin University Perth was founded in 1986. It is a public research university located in Bentley, Perth, Western Australia. The university got its name from John Curtin, Prime Minister of Australia from 1941 to 1945, and it is also the largest university in Western Australia. 

University History

In 1986 Curtin University Perth was founded in Bentley, Perth, Western Australia. Initially, university was named Curtin University of Technology and Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT). In 1969, three more institutions were merged with university: the Kalgoorlie School of Mines (opened in 1902), the Muresk Agricultural College (opened in 1926), and the Schools of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy (opened since the 1950s at Shenton Park). In December 1986, the institution was made a university, under provisions of the WA Institute of Technology Amendment Act 1986. In 1987, Curtin University of Technology was Western Australia's third and Australia's first university of technology. In 2010, the university was named Curtin University. The university has many other campuses also in Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai and Mauritius, and is also partnered with 90 exchange universities in 20 countries.

University infrastructure & services

Campus

Curtin University Perth’s main campus is located in Bentley, Western Australia, about 6km south-east of the Perth central business district area. The university has three small off-site campuses within the Perth region. The Graduate School of Business building is situated in the Perth central business district in the renovated former Government Printing Office and the law school is situated on Murray Street campus in the old Public Health Department and Chief Secretary's building. The Australian Resources Research Centre (ARRC) is located in the Technology Park Bentley, beside the main Bentley campus. Curtin university also has campuses outside Perth, the largest being the Western Australian School of Mines at Kalgoorlie, and a number of micro-campuses in locations such as Esperance, Margaret River and Geraldton. Nursing is the only course offered in Geraldton. The Muresk Institute at Northam left Curtin in 2012.

Visa and Immigration Support-

An Australian student visa is a temporary visa that allows you to come to Australia for a specified period to study at an Australian educational institution. Student visa will allow to:

  • undertake full-time study in Australia (100 credits per semester at Curtin)
  • stay in and re-enter Australia for the duration of your course
  • work up to 40 hours per fortnight during semester and unlimited hours during semester breaks.
  • Study Abroad/Exchange students are able to enroll into 75 credits as a minimum enrolment and 100 credits as a maximum enrolment.
  • You can apply for visas to bring your family members as dependents as part of your student visa application. 
  • Applying for a student visa
  • You can apply for your student visa after you have accepted your offer from Curtin and received your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment. You can lodge your application through a registered Curtin agent or directly to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). If you are applying directly, you will need to create an ImmiAccount and apply online through the DHA’s website. More information on student visas can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website.

You will need the following documentation when lodging your application:

  • a copy of your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

  • There are strict conditions attached to Australian student visas, which you need to understand and comply with. Some of the conditions student visa holders are expected to comply with include:
  • Maintaining a full-time study load. For Curtin University students a full-time load is 100 credits per semester.
  • Making satisfactory academic progress
  • Completing their studies within the timeframe outlined on their eCoE
  • Working no more than 40 hours per fortnight during any study period. The only exceptions are for Masters by Research and Doctoral Research students who can work unlimited hours once they have commenced their studies.
  • Notifying the University of your address within seven days of your arrival, and if you change your address later.
  • Holding Overseas Student Health Cover from an Australian Government-approved provider for the duration of your visa
  • Maintaining adequate schooling arrangements if you have school-age dependents in Australia
  • Notifying the University of any changes to your visa status, for example being granted permanent resident status.
