BSc. Mechanical Engineering (Honours)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Queensland

Program Overview

The University of Queensland offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) that has the mission of equipping learners with good foundations in engineering principles, practical abilities, and innovative problem-solving skills. The course prepares graduates for work in different manufacturing fields, energy, aerospace, automotive, and other industries. The course integrates theory education with training, improving problem-solving competencies and technical skills required by modern mechanical engineers.

Curriculum Structure:
The UQ Mechanical Engineering course of study is structured to present a generalist introduction to basic engineering concepts as well as advanced mechanical engineering topics. The students are taught broader areas including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, dynamics and control, and design principles. Design projects and experimental laboratory work are integral components of the course study, allowing students to apply concepts within an actual setting. In the final year, students undertake an Honours thesis or major research project, demonstrating that they are able to independently solve sophisticated engineering problems.

Accreditation:
The degree is fully accredited by Engineers Australia, thereby meeting the high requirements of professional practice in engineering within Australia and abroad. This guarantees that graduates are well-equipped for registration as a professional engineer.
The University of Queensland's main campus is located at St Lucia, Brisbane. Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities, research laboratories, and face-to-face contact with academic professionals who are industry leaders. The relaxed campus environment encourages partnership and innovation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

UQ emphasizes experiential, practical learning to complement academic learning. Students can engage in various opportunities, including:

  • Industry internships and placements with leading engineering organizations and firms, offering exposure to practical experience and professional networks.

  • Participation in design challenges and engineering competitions, such as Formula SAE and robotics competitions, that promote teamwork and creative problem-solving.

  • Undergraduate research initiatives, working with faculty on cutting-edge engineering research areas like sustainable energy, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.

  • International exchange programs, which enable students to broaden their vision and gain experience in engineering all around the world.

Progression & Future Opportunities

UQ provides a dedicated Career and Employability Service to support students throughout their course with individual career advice, CV and interview skills workshops, and connections with employers through campus recruitment sessions.
Mechanical Engineering (Honours) graduates are highly sought after by industries such as energy, automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing. They transition into roles as design engineers, project managers, systems engineers, and research experts. Graduates are employed with leading companies across Australia and internationally, while others have undertaken Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or Engineering Management.
