BEng Engineering Honours Mechanical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Victoria University

Program Overview

The University of Victoria offers a four-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering that is designed to provide students with a good foundation in the theoretical aspects of mechanical engineering and practical applications. The course is designed to prepare students for diversified careers in different industries such as manufacturing, energy, automotive, aerospace, and robotics. Students gain a solid understanding of core engineering concepts like thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, and system dynamics, along with the problem-solving and design skills that engineering challenges of today demand.

Curriculum Structure:
The Mechanical Engineering curriculum at UVic balances challenging academic theory with practice. The curriculum includes:

  • Engineering Fundamentals: Core mathematics, physics, and chemistry courses that underpin all fields of engineering.

  • Mechanical Engineering Core: Broad course coverage in mechanics of materials, dynamics, heat transfer, control systems, and manufacturing processes.

  • Laboratories and Design Projects: Hands-on lab and course work in which students formulate real-world solutions, such as group design projects that encourage creativity and innovation.

  • Capstone Project: Fourth-year project that brings together learning from previous years, in which students are requested to design, analyze, and prototype engineering solutions under the guidance of faculty members.

Accreditation
This degree is accredited by Engineers Canada to ensure that it meets the national requirements of engineering education and prepares students to pursue licensed professional engineer status.

Campus Location:
The University of Victoria is located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The engineering school provides students with modern laboratories, workshops, and facilities to facilitate a learning-friendly environment for innovation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

UVic is deeply committed to experiential learning, challenging students to extend their studies through:

  • Co-op Work Terms: Students have the option of participating in a number of paid co-op terms with local and international organizations, gaining significant industry experience and networking contacts.

  • Undergraduate Research: Students can participate in collaboration with faculty members on cutting-edge research in areas like renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and robotics.

  • Student Design Teams: Student organizations such as the Mechanical Engineering Student Society and competition engineering clubs offer students the experience of working on real-world engineering issues and national competition.

  • Community Engagement and Outreach: Students are usually in groups working on projects solving real-life problems, promoting sustainable and innovative engineering solutions.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The University of Victoria offers extensive career services, including one-on-one guidance to help students chart their career futures. Services include:

  • Resume preparation, interview skills, and job search strategies.

  • Career fairs and networking activities on campus connecting students with potential employers.

  • Support in applying to graduate school and becoming a professional engineer.

Employment:
