B.S Indigenous Studies

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Southern Queensland

Program Overview

Indigenous studies is an interdisciplinary field that creates a rigorous and respectful understanding of indigenous cultures. Also referred to as First Peoples, indigenous people are members of an ethnic group that are the original or earliest known inhabitants of a nation or area of land. This is in contrast to groups who settled or colonized these places during more recent periods of history. Many indigenous peoples, despite their rich culture and traditions, are sadly noticeably absent from the historical narrative written by those who came after them. Indigenous studies is a field of study which rebalances this historical imbalance. It draws on concepts from anthropology, sociology, and history to promote the experiences of indigenous people, ensuring that all stories are told and all people are recognized for their contributions.
