Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Curtin University Perth

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences at Curtin University offers a dynamic blend of biology and medicine — perfect for anyone fascinated by human health, disease, and the science that underpins modern healthcare. Over three years, you’ll build strong foundations in human biology, learn about genetics, microbiology, pharmacology and more, and gain hands-on lab experience to prepare you for careers in research, biotech, or clinical science.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year you’ll dive into core units such as Human Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Microbiology and Immunology — alongside essential Chemistry, Biostatistics and Scientific Communication. This gives you a solid grounding: you learn how the human body works at molecular and cellular level, understand statistical thinking in biology, and start developing the critical communication skills needed to work across health and science sectors. You’ll also begin to experience lab-based work, which helps you connect theory with real biological phenomena.

Year 2
In the second year you start to personalise your journey by selecting one or two majors. For example, if you choose the Human Biomedicine major, you’ll study applied anatomy, physiology and neuroscience — with real practical lab sessions using physiological equipment and even cadaveric material. Alternatively, if you go for Molecular Genetics, you’ll dig into molecular biology, human genetic disease, and bioinformatics; or with Pharmacology you’ll explore drug action, metabolism, toxicology, and how drugs affect cells and tissues. Through these units you begin to build specialised expertise while still grounded in rigorous science.

Year 3
In your final year you deepen your chosen major and may add a specialisation — for example in Human Pathology, Immunology & Cell Biology, Microbiology or Human Genetics. If you’re in Pharmacology, you’ll refine understanding of dose–response, drug design, and pharmacogenomics. Throughout, you’ll engage in advanced lab-based work and possibly optional units (like bioinformatics, forensics or reproductive technologies) to tailor the degree to your goals. By the end of Year 3 you’ll be ready to step confidently into a lab or research-oriented role, or continue further studies if you wish.

Focus Areas: Human Biomedicine, Molecular Genetics, Pharmacology

Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to apply biomedical science principles to real-world health challenges, design and conduct experiments, analyse biological data and communicate findings clearly and ethically.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
This degree is structured to meet the standards of global biomedical science education — combining theory, lab skills and ethical scientific practice so that you’re job-ready for research labs, biotech companies or clinical laboratories. It also lays a strong foundation for advanced study or specialisation, with skills recognised internationally.

Reputation (Employability Rankings):
The program is offered by a well-regarded institution that consistently ranks among the top universities globally for science and health disciplines. Graduates benefit from good employability rates, and many go on to roles in research, biotechnology, clinical diagnostics or further studies in medicine or biomedical research — making it a smart choice for future-oriented students.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students in the Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences at Curtin University develop practical scientific and laboratory skills through extensive hands-on learning in biomedical and health science environments. The program combines theoretical biomedical knowledge with laboratory investigation, research-informed learning, and modern scientific technologies so students gain experience relevant to healthcare, diagnostics, and biomedical research industries. Throughout the degree, students work in professional laboratory settings and learn techniques used in real biomedical and clinical science environments:

  • Biomedical Science Laboratories: Practical laboratory sessions in microbiology, molecular biology, physiology, and biochemistry using industry-standard scientific equipment.
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology Facilities: Hands-on study of body systems and disease mechanisms through anatomical models and laboratory investigation.
  • Molecular and Cellular Biology Training: Students develop laboratory skills in DNA analysis, genetics, and cellular investigation techniques used in biomedical research.
  • Research-Informed Learning Environment: Teaching is connected to active biomedical and health research conducted within Curtin’s science and health disciplines.
  • Scientific Data Analysis & Digital Tools: Students use laboratory software, digital data analysis systems, and scientific reporting tools to interpret biomedical findings.
  • Collaborative Laboratory Projects: Group-based practical activities help students develop teamwork, communication, and scientific problem-solving skills.
  • Case-Based Biomedical Learning: Real-world health and disease scenarios are used to connect laboratory science with medical and healthcare applications.
  • Curtin Library & Online Biomedical Databases: Access to extensive biomedical journals, scientific publications, and digital health research resources.
  • Industry-Relevant Laboratory Safety & Professional Practice Training: Students learn professional laboratory protocols and scientific standards used in biomedical workplaces.

Progression & Future Opportunities

If you study the Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences at Curtin University, you’re setting yourself up for a wide range of real-world careers — many of them at the cutting edge of health, science and innovation. Graduates often move into roles like clinical scientist, molecular geneticist, physiologist, lab technician, biotechnologist, or research scientist.

Here’s what this means for you:

  • Curtin gives you hands-on lab experience from early on — working with real biology tools, human-biology labs, even cadaveric specimens (when you choose the Human Biomedicine major). That means when you graduate, you’ll already have practical skills that many employers in biotechnology, medical research or pharmaceutics look for.

  • Because the course lets you specialise or double-major (in Human Biomedicine, Molecular Genetics, or Pharmacology), you can shape your degree toward what excites you: perhaps vaccine development, genetic research, drug discovery or clinical diagnostics — giving a strong sense of direction for your first job.

  • Curtin’s program opens up diverse industry and research pathways — from clinical/medical research, biotech companies, pharmaceutical firms, forensic labs, to academic and teaching roles. That broad scope gives you flexibility if your interests evolve over time.

  • Over the long term, a degree from Curtin gives you credibility and a solid foundation: employers recognise that Curtin grads receive rigorous training combining theory and applied science, preparing you to contribute meaningfully in labs, clinics or research settings.

Further Academic Progression:
After the Bachelor, you’re well positioned to deepen your scientific training. You could pursue the Honours version of biomedical science at Curtin, which focuses on research methods, projects and prepares you for a career in research, or even for a PhD down the line. Alternatively, if you want to specialise — say in genetics, pathology, pharmacology or clinical sciences — you could opt for postgraduate degrees or professional courses depending on where your interests lie.
