3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you're passionate about biology, health and cutting-edge science, the Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology / Medical Science) at UTS is your chance to turn that passion into real-world impact. The program offers two flexible majors — Biotechnology or Medical Science — letting you explore everything from molecular life sciences and disease processes to biotech innovations, while gaining hands-on lab experience, practical know-how and a broad scientific foundation.
Curriculum Structure
First Year
You begin with core life-science courses that set up a solid foundation: for example, you might study Chemistry 1, Cell Biology and Genetics, and Scientific Perspectives for Global Issues to get your basics down, followed by units like Molecular Biology, Human Anatomy & Physiology and Chemistry 2. This year ensures you understand how living systems work — from cells and molecules to organs — and builds your comfort with scientific thinking, lab work and data analysis.
Second Year
In Year 2 you start specialising. If you choose the Biotechnology track, you could take courses such as General Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Fundamentals of Pharmacology — discovering how microbes, genes and biochemical processes interplay, and how biotech tools can be used to develop medicines, diagnostics or environmental solutions. If you go for Medical Science, you’ll dive into core human-health topics like immunology, anatomy, physiology or pathophysiology. This is where theory begins to translate into real applications.
Third Year
In your final year you’ll complete remaining major-specific units and may also take elective subjects — giving you flexibility to tailor the degree to your interests. Whether it’s advanced immunology, disease pathology, biochemistry or molecular biotechnology, you’ll combine everything you’ve learned into a deeper, more integrated understanding of biology, health and disease. Many students also gain practical experience or prepare for further study or work in labs, research or the health/biotech industry.
Focus Areas
Biotechnology / Medical Science — with flexibility to explore molecular biology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, environmental & medical biotechnology
Learning Outcomes
You’ll come out able to understand biological and medical systems at molecular and cellular levels, conduct scientific investigations in labs, apply modern biotech methods, and translate biological science into real-world health, diagnostic or environmental solutions.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
This degree is offered by the well-established Faculty of Science at UTS, delivered with a strong industry- and research-orientation. With its mix of theory, lab work and professional skills, the program is designed to prepare you to step confidently into careers in health, diagnostics, biotech innovation or research — or propel you into further study.
Reputation (Employability Rankings)
UTS is ranked among Australia’s top universities for biological and health sciences, and globally it stands strong in Biological Sciences. That means when you graduate, your degree will be recognised and respected — giving you a competitive edge whether you pursue research, a lab-based career or further studies.
If you choose the Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology/Medical Science) at University of Technology Sydney (UTS), you’ll get more than just lectures — you’ll be immersed in real science from day one, blending hands-on lab work, real-world problem solving and the flexibility to shape your own scientific path. The program is designed to build practical, career-ready skills by letting you work directly with cutting-edge biotech and medical science techniques, apply theory to tangible problems, and graduate ready for labs, industry or further research.
Here’s what makes the experiential side of this program genuinely strong:
Access to world-class labs and learning spaces — You’ll study in purpose-built facilities, including the renowned “Super Lab,” giving you the chance to work with industry-grade equipment and modern research infrastructure rather than just reading about science.
Hands-on lab work and scientific experimentation — Through subjects covering pharmacology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry and more, you’ll regularly do experiments and practical work that build real laboratory skills.
Flexibility to tailor your specialisation — The program lets you customise your journey; whether you want to dive deep into biotechnology, environmental biotech, or medical science, you can pick majors and electives that match your interests and career goals.
Integration of science with biobusiness and commercial awareness — Beyond pure science, you’ll get exposure to the business side of biotech — intellectual property, commercialisation, and understanding how innovations move from lab to real-world application.
Professional, real-world readiness — The mix of solid science training, lab experience, and exposure to commercial/industry-relevant aspects means you graduate with a toolkit that equips you to step directly into research labs, biotech firms, or further study with confidence.
If you join the Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology/Medical Science) at University of Technology Sydney (UTS), you’ll be well-positioned to step into meaningful roles where science meets real-world impact. Many graduates go on to become research scientists, biotechnologists, medical scientists or lab-based professionals — maybe in hospitals, biotech firms, pharma companies or public health labs.
Here’s what this means for you:
Hands-on, industry-ready skills: UTS gives you access to its world-class labs including the Super Lab, where you’ll train in medical biotechnology, molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry and more. You graduate not just knowing theory — but with lab experience and industry-grade skills.
Flexibility to shape your path: You can major in Biotechnology or Medical Science (or even mix in environmental biotech, pathology or medical health studies), letting you tailor the degree to what excites you most.
Strong graduate outcomes: UTS is among Australia’s top universities for graduate employment, with a large proportion of science-degree holders landing full-time work soon after graduation. That gives you confidence stepping out with the degree.
Real-world connections and industry partnerships: Through the Faculty of Science you’ll be part of a community plugged into biomedical research — opening doors to internships, collaborations, and exposure to employers across biotech, healthcare and environmental sectors.
Broad long-term value: The knowledge, lab-skills and scientific thinking you gain will stay relevant whether you enter the workforce immediately or pivot later — for example into research, regulatory affairs, health policy or biotech innovation.
Further Academic Progression:
After this bachelor’s degree, you also have clear pathways if you decide to go deeper. For example, you could pursue a master’s such as the UTS Master of Medical Biotechnology to specialise — perfect if you want advanced training for research, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics or biotech product development. Alternatively, you could look at postgraduate research (Honours, PhD) to build a career in scientific research or academia.
