4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
Monash’s Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Global Studies is designed for students who want to understand global challenges through both scientific evidence and international/social perspectives. It is a strong fit for students interested in climate change, environmental policy, international development, diplomacy, human rights, sustainability, global health, science communication, research, or international organisations, with overseas study built into the course.
Curriculum structure
Year 1:
Students begin by building a foundation in both science and global studies. The course map includes two approved level 1 science sequences, alongside global studies units such as ATS1020 Global Problems, ATS1052 Global Mobilities, and language study, helping students understand scientific systems while also exploring global movement, culture, and social change.
Year 2:
In second year, students strengthen their ability to communicate scientific ideas and understand global action. They study SCI1000 Science Communication to Influence Change, one quantitative or science skills unit such as STA1010, MTH1020, MTH1030, MTH1035, SCI1020 or SCI1022, and global studies units including ATS2086 Agency and Social Change, ATS2857 Global Cultures, and ATS2997/ATS3997 Global Learning Project.
Year 3:
Students move deeper into their chosen science major while adding more flexible science electives and specialist global studies knowledge. This stage allows them to shape the degree around a specific interest area, such as environmental science, climate and atmospheric science, ecology, biotechnology, data, geography, psychology, or other science majors available through Monash.
Year 4:
In the final year, students complete advanced level 3 science major units and further Bachelor of Global Studies specialist knowledge units. By this stage, students are prepared to connect scientific analysis with global leadership, policy, community action, and international problem-solving.
Focus areas: Science, global studies, global problems, global mobility, social change, global cultures, science communication, international relations, sustainability, environmental policy, human rights, development, data analysis, scientific research, leadership, intercultural understanding.
Learning outcomes: Scientific reasoning, global awareness, communication, data analysis, information literacy, teamwork, problem-solving, presentation skills, leadership for social change, ability to apply scientific knowledge to international and community-based challenges.
Professional alignment accreditation: Monash does not list a specific professional accreditation for this double degree. Its professional value comes from earning two separate qualifications — the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Global Studies — and combining scientific expertise with leadership, global mobility, communication, and social-impact skills.
Reputation: Monash is ranked equal 36th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026, 38th in the U.S. News Best Global University Rankings 2025–2026, and equal 58th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026
Students gain practical experience through overseas study, global mobility, science communication, science internships, research-style learning, and industry-facing opportunities. Monash clearly positions this course as one where students do not only think globally but also study globally, with overseas travel required as part of the degree.
The practical learning experience is supported through:
• Compulsory overseas study: Monash states that overseas travel is a requirement of this course, helping students build international awareness and apply their learning beyond the classroom.
• Global Learning Project: The course map includes ATS2997/ATS3997 Global Learning Project, placed alongside global mobility units, allowing students to reflect on and connect their global learning experiences with their academic development.
• Global mobility units: The course structure includes multiple Global mobility units in Year 2, supporting the overseas study component of the Bachelor of Global Studies.
• Science communication training: Students complete SCI1000 Science Communication to Influence Change, helping them explain scientific ideas clearly to communities, policymakers, organisations, and international audiences.
• Science internships: Monash Science offers undergraduate internship units such as SCI3920 Science Internship and SCI3925 Science Internship Extended, with placements available to domestic and international students across for-profit and not-for-profit host organisations.
• Student-led or Monash-sourced placements: Science students may find their own industry placement or apply to be matched with a Monash industry partner, with academic and workplace supervisor assessment included.
• Arts and Global Studies internships: Monash Arts allows students to complete internship units for credit, either by choosing their own placement or being matched with one of Monash’s industry partners.
• Science Precinct exposure: Monash highlights its Science Precinct as one of the leading science precincts in the Southern Hemisphere, giving students access to a strong science learning environment.
Facilities / experiential learning reference: Monash Science internships, Monash Arts industry experience, the Global Learning Project, and the Science Precinct are the most relevant official experiential-learning references for this degree
Graduates can pursue careers that combine science, global awareness, policy, communication, sustainability, research, and social change. Monash highlights career pathways in international relations or trade, foreign affairs, diplomacy, politics and government, environmental research and planning, international not-for-profit organisations, and traditional or emerging areas of science.
Typical career roles include Environmental Policy Officer, International Development Officer, Science Communication Officer, Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs Officer, Sustainability Consultant, Research Assistant, International Relations Officer, and Non-Government Organisation Project Officer.
