Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours)

1 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Australian Catholic University

Program Overview

If you’re curious about what makes people think, feel, and behave the way they do, and you already have a psychology degree, the ACU Honours program in Melbourne is designed for you. Over one year, you’ll take your research and practical skills to the next level, gaining real confidence in ethical, professional, and applied psychology work.

Curriculum Structure:

Year 1 – Semester 1:
Right from the start, you’ll be getting hands-on with research. In Research Methods, you’ll learn to ask meaningful questions, design studies, and interpret data in ways that really make an impact. At the same time, Assessment in Psychological Practice: Foundation Skills and Professional Issues introduce the everyday practical and ethical skills psychologists rely on — from interviewing clients to writing professional reports. You’ll also kick off your Honours Thesis A, a guided research project that will grow with you throughout the year.

Year 1 – Semester 2:
Semester two takes your learning further into advanced psychology topics. Advanced Topics in Psychology challenges you to think critically about current, real-world research, while Psychological Interventions: Theory, Foundational Strategies, and Professional Issues equips you to apply evidence-based methods in real-life settings. Meanwhile, Honours Thesis B is where your research comes together — refining your findings, polishing your writing, and preparing to confidently share your work.

Focus Areas:
Neuropsychology, assessment and intervention, professional practice, research design, and reporting.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the year, you’ll be able to design and conduct robust psychological research, apply professional assessment and intervention skills, and communicate your insights clearly, ethically, and confidently.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
This Honours year builds on your accredited psychology degree, giving you the recognised research experience that postgraduate programs and professional roles often expect — whether you’re moving straight into further study or stepping into research and applied roles.

Reputation (Employability Edge):
Studying psychology in Melbourne places you in a vibrant, globally respected field. ACU consistently ranks highly in QS and Times Higher Education rankings for social sciences and health disciplines — giving your CV a strong edge as you take your next step.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This one-year honours program is all about doing psychology, not just reading about it. You’ll get hands-on experience designing and carrying out real research—from coming up with your questions and hypotheses to collecting data, analyzing results, and writing up your findings. Along the way, you’ll also develop practical professional skills like using assessment tools, conducting interviews, preparing cases, writing reports, and learning foundational intervention strategies—skills that are valuable whether you’re stepping into the workplace or continuing your studies. At the heart of the year is the honours thesis, a real research project you’ll own and complete under the guidance of an academic supervisor.

Here’s what you’ll actually get to do:

  • Dive into research through the Honours Thesis units (PSYC410 and PSYC421), where you’ll plan, run, and report on a substantial psychological study as part of your core coursework.

  • Learn research the practical way in the Research Methods unit, building skills in data collection, analysis, and interpretation that mirror what real psychologists do.

  • Practice professional assessment skills in the Assessment in Psychological Practice: Foundation Skills and Professional Issues unit, using real-world tools and tackling tasks that psychologists handle every day.

  • Develop workplace-ready capabilities through units on interventions, ethics, interviewing, supervision, and case preparation—bridging classroom learning with professional practice.

If you’re excited by psychology as a doing discipline, this honours year gives you structured, career-relevant experiences that will build your confidence and prepare you for either a professional path or further study.
