Bachelor of Psychological Science (Human Resource Management)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Wollongong

Program Overview

If you’ve ever wondered why people think, feel, and act the way they do, this degree is your playground for curiosity and discovery. It’s designed for open minds who love exploring human behaviour, sharpening research skills, and connecting what they learn to real life. Along the way, you’ll build pathways into careers across health, business, community work—or even further study in psychology—while having fun asking big questions about people.

Curriculum Structure:
First Year: You’ll start by building a solid foundation in psychology, diving into subjects like Foundations in Psychology A & B to explore the big ideas behind behaviour and mental processes. Research Methods and Statistics gently introduces you to the language of science, while Critical Thinking and Communication Skills helps you learn to question, interpret, and discuss psychology with confidence. It’s a year of curiosity, community, and getting comfortable with the tools that will guide your journey.

Second Year: Now you start to go deeper. You’ll explore Personality to understand what makes people unique, and Cognition and Perception to see how we interpret the world around us. Developmental and Social Psychology show how relationships and environments shape us across life stages, while Quantitative Methods in Psychology lets you design and analyse real data. By the end of this year, you’ll be confidently connecting theory to everyday human behaviour.

Third Year: Everything comes together here. In Assessment & Intervention, psychological theory meets practice, and Applied Psychology shows how what you’ve learned works in the real world. You can tailor your final year with electives like Forensic Psychology or Child Development, shaping the degree around your passions. By graduation, you’ll be ready to step into careers or further study with a strong understanding of research, theory, and practical application.

Focus Areas: Foundations of Psychology; Research & Statistics; Cognition & Development; Social Behaviour; Applied Assessment & Intervention.

Learning Outcomes: Graduates understand human behaviour with insight, communicate clearly about people-centred issues, and confidently apply research and psychological theory in real-world settings.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): This degree covers the first three years of professional psychology training in Australia, giving you a solid platform for a competitive honours year and postgraduate study if your goal is to become a registered psychologist.

Reputation & Employability: UOW is recognised for strong student outcomes, ranking well in global tables like QS and Times Higher Education for education quality and graduate employability. Graduates find opportunities across human services, health, research, HR, and community sectors—or continue on to postgraduate pathways in clinical, organisational, or educational psychology.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This degree is built around actively learning psychology as a science you practise, not just a subject you memorise. From your very first year you’ll engage with research design, statistics, and real psychological enquiry in ways that mirror how working professionals think and operate. You’ll also take subjects where you apply psychological concepts to real‑world problems and take part in practical work and placements that help you bridge theory with real experience. Over time, you’ll develop the confidence to analyse behaviour, design studies, interpret data, and communicate insights — exactly the kinds of skills employers and postgraduate programs look for.

Here are the key experiential learning opportunities you’ll experience in the program:

  • Research Methods & Statistics coursework, where you practice designing studies and analysing real data as part of learning how psychological science is conducted.

  • Practical work and placements embedded in your workload, helping you apply concepts in authentic settings as you grow your capabilities.

  • Independent research projects, especially if you pursue the Honours pathway, giving you hands‑on experience in planning and carrying out a substantive investigation.

  • Foundational subjects that link theory with real behaviour, preparing you to apply psychological insights to social, developmental, cognitive and biological contexts throughout your degree.

  • Opportunities to combine psychology with other disciplines, letting you apply psychological thinking in broader professional contexts like human resources, marketing, or social research.

  • Exposure to applied settings on campus, such as the Northfields (Psychology) Clinic, where psychology is practiced with real clients (primarily at the postgraduate level, but visible in the broader psychology community you’ll be part of).

These experiences make the degree much more than classroom learning — they help you build the practical, analytical, and interpersonal skills that are central to a future in psychology or many related careers.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the Bachelor of Psychological Science at the University of Wollongong leave with practical, science‑based insights into human behaviour that employers really value. You’ll gain skills that can be applied across industries — from supporting wellbeing and improving workplace culture to analysing data and understanding people. Many alumni step into roles like Human Resources Assistant, Research Assistant, Graduate Project Officer, or Health and Support Worker, and these are just a few examples of the paths this degree can open up.

Here’s what that could mean for you:

Career‑ready support from day one: UOW’s Careers & Employability team is here to guide you every step of the way. You can get one‑on‑one career chats, attend resume and interview workshops, explore job boards, and take part in employability events to connect with employers. There are also mentoring programs, internships, and work‑integrated learning opportunities to help you get real-world experience while you study.

Insight into real job outcomes: Psychology graduates have gone on to roles like Caseworker, Education Liaison Officer, Youth Worker, Market Researcher, and HR Graduate, working with organisations from government agencies to not-for-profits and corporate teams. Seeing where past students have landed gives you a sense of the possibilities ahead.

Flexible career pathways: This degree lays a strong foundation for work in business, education, public service, community support, and research. You can also pair your psychology major with another major or minor — like Human Resource Management, Marketing, or Sociology — to expand your career options even further.

Hands-on experience and recognition: The course counts as the first three years of professional psychology training. Plus, access to facilities like the Northfields Clinic lets you learn in real-world contexts, giving you practical experience that’s highly valued by employers.

Long-term value and connections: UOW’s reputation in Australia and internationally, along with its alumni networks and career expos, makes it easier to build professional connections that can support your career growth for years to come.

Further academic progression: If your goal is to become a registered psychologist, this degree sets you up to move into the Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours) at UOW — the accredited fourth year needed for provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. From there, you could pursue postgraduate study like a Master of Psychology, research degrees such as a PhD, or specialise in areas like clinical, organisational, or educational psychology. Even if clinical practice isn’t your focus, honours and further study open doors to advanced research, high-level advisory roles, or specialised areas like neuropsychology or health psychology — letting you shape your career in ways that match your interests and passions.
