The history of the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology is an integral part of the history of Sofia University. The creation of the departments and specialties that make up the FCNF began in the 1920s within the Faculty of History and Philology - the first faculty at the University. In 1950, the Faculty of History and Philology was divided into two faculties: Philosophy-History and Philology. In 1965, the Faculty of Philology split into the Faculty of Slavic Philology and the Faculty of Western Philology, renamed in 1979 the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology. The current name, which more accurately reflects the content of the philological fields, inherits the name of the former institutes of classical and modern philology.
