4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
UNB Fredericton offers a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering program that is designed to provide students with a good foundation in mechanical engineering principles and practices. Through four years of coursework, students gain a comprehensive understanding of mechanical systems, energy, and manufacturing, preparing them with many career options in fields such as aerospace, automobile, biomedicine, and renewable energy.
Curriculum Structure
The UNB Mechanical Engineering program provides solid theoretical backgrounds with practical experience. The course structure includes:
• Core Courses: Students take basic courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computational techniques, which serve as the basis for advanced material.
• Core Mechanical Engineering Subjects: Students take such subjects as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanical system design, materials science, and mechanics of materials.
• Laboratory and Design Projects: Hands-on projects allow students to apply theoretical concepts to practical problems in real-world settings, developing experiential engineering competence.
• Capstone Design Project: Students, in groups, work on in the third year an interdisciplinary project that allows them to develop problem-solving, engineering design, and innovation competencies.
Accreditation
The program is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) to ensure that students are prepared to achieve the highest standards of professional engineering practice and that the program prepares graduates to become eligible to pursue professional engineering licenses, like the P.Eng. (Professional Engineer) in Canada.
Campus Location
The campus of UNB is situated in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, with students having access to world-class facilities such as advanced laboratories, workshops, and research centers. All these facilities are of important significance in providing students with both theoretical knowledge and actual practice.
UNB specializes in experiential learning with multiple opportunities for students to gain real-world experience:
• Co-operative Education (Co-op): Students can gain industry experience while earning academic credits, working with leading companies in sectors like engineering, automotive, and energy.
• Internships: The university provides access to the finest organizations in the industry, enabling students to build their professional network and gain practical experience.
• Research Opportunities: Undergraduate research is offered to students to collaborate with the faculty on innovative projects in robotics, energy systems, and sustainability.
• Student Clubs and Competitions: UNB encourages student-driven clubs and competitions, i.e., the Formula SAE racing team and the engineering design challenge, that complement technical proficiency with teamwork skills.
UNB's Career Development Office (CDO) offers extensive student support in preparation for the job market:
• Career Counselling: Personalized advice on career choices in engineering and related fields.
• Resume and Cover Letter Workshops: Assistance in developing professional job resumes and cover letters.
• Interview Preparation: Practice interviews and counseling to help prepare students for job interviews.
• On-Campus Recruiting: Students have the opportunity to engage with employers via career fairs and recruiting sessions held at UNB.
Employability
Mechanical Engineering graduates are highly sought after by employers in a range of industries from aerospace to energy. Graduates have gone on to gain employment with top companies such as General Electric, Bombardier, and Siemens, as well as in research and academia.
Academic Progression:
Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, students at UNB can go on to pursue postgraduate opportunities such as:
• Master of Science (MSc) in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems, or Robotics.
• Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Engineering Management.
• PhD in advanced areas of engineering or applied science.
