BSc Honours Major Biology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Lakehead University Thunder Bay

Program Overview

Honours Bachelor of Science (Biology Major) at Lakehead University is a four-year, on-campus program designed for students seeking a hands-on, research-driven education in the biological sciences. You’ll explore everything from cell and molecular biology to ecology, evolution, and biodiversity, with the flexibility to tailor your studies to your career interests.

Curriculum structure

  • Year 1: You'll begin with Biology 1050 (Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology) and Biology 1051 (Introduction to Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity), which will provide a strong foundation in cellular processes, genetics, and diversity of life. You'll also take Chemistry 1110 and 1130 (Introductory Chemistry I & II) and Mathematics 1171 and 1172 (Calculus I & II) or the social/life sciences calculus sequence. All courses include integrated laboratory components, and you’ll broaden your education with three electives outside the Biology department—students interested in health sciences are encouraged to take a Physics course as an elective.

  • Year 2: Your learning becomes more in-depth with foundation courses like Genetics (BIOL 2171), Evolutionary Principles (BIOL 3671), and Ecology (BIOL/ENST 2210). You'll also enrol in advanced labs and may select electives in fields like Animal Biology (BIOL 1110/1130), Plant Biology (BIOL 1130/2131), or Microbiology (BIOL 2713). Laboratory and fieldwork are the focus of this year, providing you with hands-on experience in experimental design, data gathering, and analysis.

  • Year 3: You’ll select a concentration—Animal Sciences, Biodiversity & Conservation, Plant Sciences, or Neuroscience—and take specialised courses such as Comparative Animal Physiology (BIOL 3251), Conservation Biology (BIOL/NRMT 3232), Biogeography (BIOL 3151), or Molecular Genetics (BIOL 3135). Fieldwork and research assistantships are integrated, and you’ll have the chance to participate in local field schools or research projects, leveraging Lakehead’s unique Boreal Forest setting for hands-on study.

  • Year 4: This year emphasises independent research and senior specialisation. You may take Biology 4101 (Honours Thesis), where you will work closely with a faculty advisor to solve a biological question, write a major report, and present findings in a department seminar. You'll also take senior electives such as Cancer Biology (BIOL 4230), Mammalogy (BIOL 4211), or Bioethics Issues for Life Science (BIOL 4372) and participate in capstone experiences to prepare you for graduate school or professional careers.

Focus areas: Cell and molecular biology, genetics, evolution, biodiversity, ecology, animal sciences, conservation, plant sciences, neuroscience

Learning outcomes: Critical thinking, laboratory and field research skills, scientific communication, data analysis, and independent research

Reputation (employability rankings): #23 in Biology in Canada (Shiksha Popularity Ranking 2025)

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll gain practical skills through small class sizes, hands-on labs, and direct access to the Lakehead University Instrumentation Lab (LUIL), where you’ll operate research equipment yourself. The program’s location in the Boreal Forest means field trips and field schools are integrated into regular class hours, offering unique, local research opportunities.

Experiential highlights include:

  • Laboratory courses: In cell biology, molecular biology, ecology, and genetics

  • Fieldwork: In the Boreal Forest and local ecosystems

  • Research assistantship and summer faculty research internships

  • Independent research: With the use of the Lakehead University Instrumentation Lab (LUIL)

  • Research project: In an Honours thesis with faculty supervision

  • Data mapping and analysis: With Lakehead University–Geospatial Data Centre

  • Applied and community-based research projects

  • Use of specialist equipment: Such as the Biotechnology Laboratory for Enzymes and Bioproducts, Paleo-DNA Laboratory, and Aquatic Toxicity Research Centre

  • Scientific presentations and group projects

  • Co-op and work-integrated learning opportunities

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of Lakehead University’s Honours Bachelor of Science (Biology Major) program are highly employable, moving into roles such as research biologist, laboratory technologist, environmental consultant, science educator, and conservation officer. Many alumni also pursue further studies in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, or graduate research, reflecting the program’s strong reputation and practical focus.

Here’s how Lakehead specifically supports your future:

  • Career Services & Research: Small class sizes mean close mentorship and networking with faculty. Students gain hands-on experience in almost every course through labs and fieldwork, and can participate in faculty research projects ranging from ecology to biorefining. The Honours Thesis option allows you to design and conduct your own research project with direct faculty supervision.

  • Employment Stats & Salary: While specific Lakehead data isn’t published, biology graduates in Canada typically start between $45,000–$55,000 CAD per year, with higher earnings as you gain experience or further credentials.

  • Industry Partnerships: Lakehead’s location in the Boreal Forest enables intensive local field trips and field schools, leveraging unique access to diverse ecosystems. The university’s community and industry connections help students secure summer jobs, internships, and research placements.

  • Accreditation: The Honours BSc Biology is fully recognised in Canada and internationally, and offers four areas of concentration: Animal Sciences, Biodiversity & Conservation, Plant Sciences, and Neuroscience, allowing you to tailor your degree to your interests and career goals.

  • Graduate Outcomes: Students develop strong lab, field, and analytical skills, and have access to the Lakehead University Instrumentation Lab, where you learn to operate advanced scientific equipment themselves — an advantage for graduate school or science-based jobs.

Further Academic Progression: After your Honours BSc Biology at Lakehead, you can pursue a Master’s (MSc) in Biology or related fields at Lakehead or other universities. The program also prepares you for entry into professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, or education, supported by Lakehead’s strong academic and research environment.
