Honours Molecular Biology and Genetics BSc at McMaster University is a four-year, on-campus degree program exploring the molecular underpinnings of life, disease, and evolution. You'll receive comprehensive training in genetics, genomics, cell biology, bioinformatics, and molecular techniques to prepare you for research, medicine, biotechnology, or graduate studies.
Course structure:
Year 1: Will cover BIOLOGY 1A03 (Cellular and Molecular Biology), BIOLOGY 1M03 (Biodiversity, Evolution and Humanity), CHEM 1A03/1AA3 (Introductory Chemistry I & II), MATH 1LS3 (Calculus for Life Sciences I), and PHYSICS 1A03 or 1C03 (Introductory Physics), and you will develop a good foundation in sciences
Year 2: Introduces core courses such as BIOLOGY 2B03 (Cell Biology), BIOLOGY 2C03 (Genetics), BIOLOGY 2EE3 (Introduction to Microbiology and Biotechnology), and BIOLOGY 2L06 (Experimental Design in Biology), along with STATS 2B03 (Statistical Methods for Science). You’ll also complete a second physics course if not done in Year 1
Year 3: You’ll deepen your expertise with advanced courses in molecular genetics, gene regulation, genomics, developmental biology, and bioinformatics. Laboratory courses emphasise hands-on skills in molecular techniques, experimental design, and data analysis
Year 4: Focuses on specialisation and independent research. You’ll choose upper-level electives in areas like cancer genetics, molecular evolution, human genome analysis, and may complete an independent research project or thesis under faculty supervision
Focus areas: Molecular genetics, genomics, cell biology, bioinformatics, gene regulation, developmental biology, microbiology, cancer genetics
Learning outcomes: Molecular laboratory techniques, data analysis, experimental design, scientific communication, critical thinking, bioinformatics
