Honours Integrated Science (iSci) BSc at McMaster University is Canada’s most innovative undergraduate science program, blending content from biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, mathematics, and psychology. You’ll learn through inquiry-based projects, hands-on labs, and fieldwork, developing the skills to tackle real-world scientific challenges and specialise in a discipline of your choice.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1: You’ll take ISCI 1A24 A/B (Integrated Science I), a full-year course integrating biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth science, and psychology through thematic modules, hands-on labs, and fieldwork. Over 25 experiments, field labs, and workshops are completed in the iSci Lab, and you’ll also choose 6 units of electives
Year 2: You’ll enrol in ISCI 2A18 A/B (Integrated Science II), where you’ll deepen your interdisciplinary knowledge and begin to focus on a concentration such as Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Medical & Biological Physics, Physics, Psychology, or Sustainable Chemistry. You’ll complete discipline-specific modules and research projects, and take required courses for your chosen concentration
Year 3: Features ISCI 3A12 A/B (Integrated Science III), emphasising advanced inquiry, independent and team research, and scientific communication. You’ll participate in multidisciplinary projects, fieldwork, and laboratory investigations, and continue coursework in your concentration
Year 4: You’ll complete ISCI 4A12 A/B (Integrated Science IV), a capstone experience focused on independent research and integration across scientific disciplines. You’ll conduct a major research project, present your findings, and take advanced electives within your concentration to prepare for graduate or professional study
Focus areas: Biology, chemistry, physics, earth and environmental science, mathematics, psychology, scientific communication, research methods
Learning outcomes: Interdisciplinary study, field and laboratory methods, data analysis, scientific presentation, critical thinking, teamwork
