BSc Biology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Mount Royal University

Program Overview

BSc Biology at Mount Royal University is a four-year, on-campus degree offering a deep dive into the structure and function of living systems. You’ll study everything from cell biology and genetics to ecology and evolution, with the flexibility to specialise in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, or Ecology and Evolution.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You will lay the groundwork with BIOL 1202 (Introduction to Cell Biology), BIOL 1204 (The Evolution of Biological Diversity), CHEM 1201/1203 (General Chemistry I & II), MATH 1200 (Calculus for Scientists I), and general education courses.

  • Year 2: Has key courses like BIOL 2203 (Human Anatomy), BIOL 2205 (Genetics), BIOL 2209 (Ecology), and BCEM 2201 (Biochemistry I), as well as MATH 2233 (Statistics for Biological Sciences) and electives to support your concentration area.

  • Year 3: You’ll deepen your expertise with advanced courses such as BIOL 3104 (Human Physiology I), BIOL 3106 (Evolutionary Biology), BIOL 3108 (Conservation Biology), and specialised electives in areas like animal behaviour, molecular genetics, or histology.

  • Year 4: Focuses on senior-level electives. You can take the Honours stream by completing BIOL 5501/5502 (Honours Research I & II), or complete advanced courses such as BIOL 4102 (Pathophysiology), BIOL 4310 (Molecular Ecology), or BIOL 4410 (Population and Conservation Genetics) that culminate in a capstone project or research experience.

Focus areas: Cellular and molecular biology, anatomy and physiology, ecology, evolution, genetics, biochemistry, conservation biology

Learning outcomes: Laboratory skills, field research, data analysis, scientific communication, critical thinking, and independent research

Professional alignment (accreditation): Eligible for Alberta Society of Professional Biologists membership

Reputation (employability rankings): Program prepares graduates for graduate study, professional schools, and industry roles

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Mount Royal University, you’ll gain hands-on experience in both laboratory and field settings, working directly with faculty on innovative research projects. The Biology Department has a common teaching and research space where undergraduate students use advanced equipment in areas of molecular biology, physiology, ecology, and neurobiology. Courses like BIOL 4320 (Techniques of Field Research in Biology) have you designing and conducting field research, collecting data in the field, and studying ethical guidelines for working with wild populations.

Alternatively, you can also advance your practical knowledge through the Co-operative Education (Co-op) program, where you can undertake a maximum of three four-month, full-time work terms in biology careers and have a Co-op designation on your degree.

Experiential highlights include:

  • Conduct fieldwork and collect biological information: In different ecosystems through BIOL 4320 and other field courses

  • Collaborate in shared teaching/research laboratories: Well-equipped for molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, and ecology

  • Participate in Honours research projects: Presenting findings in departmental seminars

  • Experience paid Co-op work terms: With industry, government, or research organisations, sponsored by MRU's Career Services

  • Develop professional skills: Through practice interviews, networking events, and industry panel presentations in the Co-op orientation course

  • Collaborate on group projects and community-based research

  • Utilise MRU Science & Technology research labs: For independent and faculty-led research

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of Mount Royal University’s BSc Biology (4 Years On Campus) program are highly employable, moving into roles such as laboratory technician, field research technician, research scientist, food quality inspector, wetland ecologist, biotechnologist, and science educator. Many alumni also pursue further studies in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, or graduate research, supported by the program’s strong academic and practical foundation.

Here’s how Mount Royal specifically supports your future:

  • Career Services & Experiential Learning: The program emphasises hands-on experience through laboratory and field work in courses such as anatomy, physiology, genetics, cell biology, microbiology, molecular biology, ecology, and evolution. Students can specialise by completing concentrations in Cellular & Molecular Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, or Ecology & Evolution, tailoring their degree to career goals. The Honours stream offers a competitive, year-long research experience where students complete a major research project under faculty supervision, culminating in a manuscript and departmental presentation—ideal for those considering graduate school. Opportunities exist for independent research, advanced topics, and participation in events like Research and Scholarship Days.

  • Employment Stats & Salary: While specific MRU data isn’t published, biology graduates in Alberta typically start between $45,000–$55,000 CAD per year, with higher earnings for those with research or honours experience. Graduates may apply for membership in the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists, supporting professional recognition and advancement.

  • Industry Partnerships & Research: The department supports student research through faculty-led projects and partnerships, with students often presenting at campus showcases or submitting research for publication. Faculty are active in research, with recent awards for innovation and teaching excellence, providing mentorship and networking opportunities.

  • Accreditation: The BSc Biology is fully recognised in Canada and internationally, and fulfils prerequisites for graduate and professional programs (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, education).

  • Graduate Outcomes: Students gain strong analytical, research, and scientific communication skills, with a well-rounded foundation in both theoretical and practical biology. Graduates are competitive for employment, further study, and professional certification.

Further Academic Progression: After your BSc Biology at Mount Royal, you can pursue a Master’s (MSc) or PhD in Biology or related fields at MRU or other universities. The program also prepares you for professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, or education, supported by MRU’s robust research opportunities, honours stream, and faculty mentorship.
