Students tailor their studies through concentrations and electives, gaining extensive field and laboratory experience to prepare them for science, health, and environmental careers or graduate school.
Curricular structure:
Year 1: Core courses in first-year biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics are offered, with an emphasis on basic concepts in cell biology, biodiversity, and the scientific method. Laboratory sessions are woven into acquire hands-on expertise.
Year 2: Reinforces learning with courses in genetics, ecology, biochemistry, and microbiology, as well as electives in science and liberal arts. Lab and fieldwork continue to be prominent, with a focus on data analysis and research techniques.
Year 3: Offers senior-level courses in areas such as animal biology, ecology and environmental biology, or cellular, molecular and microbial biology. Students select advanced-level electives appropriate to their interests and may pursue directed studies or research projects. Broad field and lab experience is a hallmark of this stage.
Year 4: Period of specialisation and independent study. Students can work on an Honours thesis or advanced research project under close supervision from the faculty. Advanced electives and capstone courses further develop competency in areas such as conservation biology, biotechnology, or marine biology. Co-op training to obtain paid related work experience may also be requested through the optional co-op program.
Focus areas: Animal biology, ecology and environmental biology, cellular/molecular/microbial biology, conservation biology, biotechnology, marine biology
Learning outcomes: Critical thinking, research skills in laboratories and field, scientific communication, data analysis, research design, and independent investigation
