BSc Biology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of British Columbia Vancouver

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Biology at UBC offers a broad education in the life sciences with a mix of core knowledge and possibilities for specialisation in subfields like Animal Biology, Ecology, or Marine Biology. This is for students interested in learning about living organisms and their environment, and who want to have broad as well as detailed knowledge.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: Students begin with foundation courses like BIOL 112 – Cell Biology, which introduces the cell's structure and function, and BIOL 121 – Genetics, Evolution and Ecology, which introduces the principles of heredity, evolution by natural selection, and ecosystems. The year also features BIOL 140 – Laboratory Investigations in Life Science, which provides students with firsthand experience with designing experiments and interpreting data. For the interested student in human biology, BIOL 153/155 – Human Biology provides an introduction to human physiology and anatomy.

  • Year 2: The second year builds on basic knowledge with BIOL 204 – Vertebrate Structure and Function, which addresses comparative anatomy and physiology of vertebrates, and BIOL 205 – Comparative Invertebrate Zoology, which examines the diversity, evolution, and biology of invertebrates. Students also acquire BIOL 203 – Eukaryotic Microbiology, which addresses the structure, function, and diversity of eukaryotic microorganisms, and BIOL 233 – Genetics for Life, which further examines genetic mechanisms and inheritance.

  • Year 3: Advanced analytical and quantitative skills are emphasised during this year through BIOL 300 – Fundamentals of Biostatistics and BIOL 301 – Biomathematics so that students become skilled at interpreting biological data. Advanced courses such as BIOL 310 – Introduction to Animal Behaviour and BIOL 335 – Molecular Genetics allow the students to learn about animal behaviour and the molecular basis of genetic processes.

  • Year 4: Senior students are able to specialise in the final year through graduate research courses and elective courses. Options include BIOL 402 – Aquatic Ecology, the study of freshwater and marine ecosystems; BIOL 413 – Zoogeography and BIOL 417 – Phylogenetic Biology, studies of the geographical distribution and evolution of organisms; and BIOL 427 – Ornithology and Herpetology, comprehensive studies on birds and reptiles/amphibians. Capstone activities may involve individual research or graduate seminars on chosen subdisciplines.

Focus areas: Animal Biology, Cell and Developmental Biology, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Marine Biology, Plant Biology, Chemical Biology, Human Biology, Environmental Biology

Learning outcomes: Scientific literacy, laboratory skills, data analysis, critical thinking, research competence, communication, teamwork, ethical awareness, fieldwork proficiency, professional readiness

Reputation (employability rankings): UBC is ranked within the global top 40 and its Biology program is one of Canada's strongest.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

UBC Biology students become involved in experiential learning through engagement with world-class research facilities, interactive laboratories, and direct outdoor experience. The program offers access to advanced imaging, molecular biology laboratories, and living collections and enables students to link theory to practical biological problems. Research collaboration with senior scientists and involvement in research projects are at the core, and paid work placements in various biology areas are offered by the Co-op program. Mentors and specialized resources aid students in preparation for academia and industry. Experiential highlights include:

  • Beaty Biodiversity Museum and Collections Databases: Two million specimens for academic and public education use

  • Biodiversity Research Centre: Site of 50+ researchers in evolution, ecology, and conservation

  • BioImaging Facility: Live cell microscopy, TEM/SEM, and high-quality sample preparation

  • Biological Services Laboratory: Scale analyses and microbiology

  • Canadian Centre for the Culture of Microorganisms: Marine phytoplankton, microalgae, and fungi cultures alive

  • Greenhouses: Systematics, developmental biology, and ecology research

  • Sequencing and Bioinformatics Consortium: High-throughput sequencing and genotyping

  • Co-op Program: Four paid work terms, four months each, in Canada or abroad, starting third year

  • Undergraduate Research: Directed studies, honours thesis, micro-research experiences, and summer research grants

  • Field research trips and group projects in areas like ornithology, aquatic ecology, and conservation biology

  • Utilization of advanced facilities for mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography
