Computer Engineering, Bachelor of Science (Technology) and Master of Science (Technology)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Aalto University

Program Overview

If you are fascinated by how computers, smart devices, and digital systems work behind the scenes, Aalto’s Computer Engineering programme is built for you. This programme combines hardware, software, and intelligent systems design — preparing you to create technologies that power everything from mobile devices and networks to artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:
Your first year is all about building a strong scientific and technical foundation. You will study Mathematics, Physics, and Introduction to Programming and Computer Systems, developing analytical thinking and core engineering skills that form the backbone of all future computer engineering studies.

Year 2:
In the second year, you begin shaping your identity as a computer engineer. You explore Digital Systems Design, Low-Level Programming, and Electronics and Signal Processing, while working on project-based courses that teach you how real computing hardware and software interact in practical applications.

Year 3:
By the third year, you move into advanced computer engineering topics such as Embedded Systems, Communication Networks, and Integrated Computing Systems. You also complete a major project or bachelor’s thesis, proving your ability to design and implement real engineering solutions — an ideal preparation for the master’s phase or industry.

(After the bachelor’s degree, students continue seamlessly into the 2-year Master of Science in Technology, specialising further in advanced computing fields.)

Focus Areas

Hardware Design, Software Systems, Embedded Systems, Computer Networks, Intelligent Systems, Internet of Things, Signal Processing, Integrated Computing.

Learning Outcomes

By graduation, you will be able to design computing hardware and software solutions, analyse complex engineering challenges, apply mathematical and technical principles to real-world systems, and work confidently in multidisciplinary technology teams.
