Historical musicology finds its subject in music from antiquity to the present. She begins with the research of sources and deals with music theory and edition practice, notation and types of sentences, genres and forms with the analysis and interpretation of music. The aim is to develop and understand musical works and music cultures in their historical and social mobility as well as in their anthropological, scientific, aesthetic and media context. This results in interfaces especially with historical and philological subjects, but also with numerous other disciplines from the humanities and natural sciences, theology and economics, law and education.
Applicant should have university entrance qualification (Abitur), you should have a general musical talent and a strong interest in historical contexts for the study of musicology. Basic knowledge of harmony and score reading as well as simple piano playing are required, The widest possible knowledge of foreign languages is indispensable for musicology. English and a Romance language (Italian, French or Spanish) must be proved when registering for the bachelor's examination by presenting the high school diploma or corresponding language certificates (at least level A2). Knowledge of Latin is also helpful, but a Latinum is only compulsory for the master's program
