Mechanical engineering has become an increasingly diverse and complex subject since the start of industrialization. The discipline originally covered the development, design, manufacture, operation, distribution and repair of machinery, vehicles and equipment. In the course of economic, technical and social development, however, new areas have been added. As a result, mechanical engineering is increasingly linked to other disciplines, in particular electrical engineering and computer science (mechatronics) and the natural sciences, as well as to medicine and economics.
