BA Science of Christian Orient

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Martin Luther University of Halle Wittenberg

Program Overview

The study of the Christian Orient deals with the diverse forms of Christianity in the Orient from the beginnings to the present. The area to be treated extends geographically from the Caucasus (Armenia and Georgia) through the Middle East to north-eastern Africa (Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia) as well as to Central and East Asia (along the Silk Road) and India. On the eve of Islam, the Orient, including North Africa, was almost completely Christianized. The emergence of Islam is inconceivable without Oriental Christianity. Even the transmission of ancient culture and science to the empire of the caliphs is a Christian heritage. The Oriens Christianus covers a variety of languages (Armenian, Georgian, Christian Arabic, Syriac, Coptic, Nubian, Ethiopian) and literatures.
